to be honest, you'd never seen anyone else with three wives— except for uzui. he told you about it awhile ago, something along the lines of family tradition and such, but you had forgotten majority of what he'd told you in under five minutes after the conversation had ended. whoops?

you weren't in the mood for heavy thinking right now, as you were pretty sure your legs were about to snap in half and fall off. you just needed to rest somewhere, and this residence was closest.

hearing someone knocking, the door slid open.

"[name]?" the surprised voice of suma rang through your ears, filling you with a sense of relief that meant you were safe. you had lived and survived meeting upper two, even if it hadn't ended in death for either of you.

"i'm sorry for arriving uninvited, but something happened. i needed to get to the closest residence i could. please let me in." you said, slightly gasping.

suma looked worried, noticing the wounds on your legs, and she opened the door wider. "yes, of course! i'll go and get the others!"

you smiled. suma might be emotional, yes, but she was kind— not to mention a very good friend of yours.

suma led you to where you could sit down before scurrying off to find her partners.

a moment later, tengen himself strode through the door, his wives trailing behind him.

"[name]. is everything alright? suma said you were injured and had to return here instead of your own residence."

you shook your head. "i had an interaction with uppermoon two."

the room fell silent. tengen's eyes widened so much you thought that they'd pop out of his head.

"and you lived? [name], did you really do it? did you really kill upper two?" he asked, mouth hanging open slightly.

you shook your head. "no. i didn't manage to kill him. i'd just gotten back from another mission— i had no energy at all, really. he let me go for some reason. he took my presence like a joke."

tengen's face crumpled with un-satisfaction. "you let him leave with his head still attached? [name], you know you're supposed to kill any demon you see. it's in the corps rules. they're a danger to mankind—"

"and they're a danger to demon slayers, too. i would've died if i had properly tried to cut his head off, you know? i'm lucky he even let me live in the first place." you cut in.

the uzui's fell silent, seemingly understanding your point.

"that's true, battling upper ranks alone is especially dangerous," hinatsuru spoke, folding her hands infront of her.

makio huffed. "well, even if you didn't die, you still got hurt on the way back! ignore the fighting parts, you need help!"

you chuckled at makio's behaviour, then nodded. "yeah. i do."

later, you'd been fed, bandaged and given a flask of water to take home with you.

"be safe on the way back!" suma shouted.

"i will!" you shouted back.

grasping your haori in your hands, you left the uzui residence.

the walk home went surprisingly fast, and you found yourself at your doorstep.

shuffling inside, you couldn't shake off the feeling that something didn't feel right.

'are my wounds just annoying my brain? nothing seems to be out of place.' you thought.

you carefully walked through the halls of your house, trying not to make your footsteps noticeable. maybe there was an animal in a room here somewhere? surely, nothing to worry about that much.

you slid open the door to your bedroom, freezing in your tracks when you saw a black haired figure sat in your chair, back turned to you, reading a very familiar book.

he turned around, fangs glinting at you.

"welcome home, [name]. did you enjoy your outing?" he said.

"what...?" you were terrified. this was the demon king. god, you couldn't even face upper two. what were you supposed to do about this?

you heard the pang of a biwa. you weren't in your house anymore.

"unfortunately, this is now your permanent one." he grinned, tone sour and sinister.
