"You're a good backpack," Steve laughed when he parked his bike, "I hardly noticed you were behind me."

I hadn't spoken the whole ride, the weight of my choice settling in. I isolated myself, completely and wholly, I knew I would never be accepted back into my family, not after I made a fool of them. Or if I was, there would be no way I would ever have any sort of Freedom, I'd be chained to the wants of my father for the rest of my life. Yet, I was scared, so very, very scared. But I couldn't show I was scared, not now, not when I was surrounded by strangers. Dangerous strangers from what it seemed. At least that's what I could gather from the the sign on the bar.

The Underworld, Home of the New Mexico chapter of the Hades Hellraisers. We feed on your soul.

The hitch in my breath made Steve turn towards me, following my eyes up to the sign and he chuckled, "Don't worry princess," I got off the bike, standing before him when he crossed his arms. The white shirt stretched across his chest beautifully. It distracted me from the men watching me because I was new, I was something shiny for them to discover. "We don't actually feed on your soul."

"Comforting."

Steve's head tilted back in a laugh and I couldn't help but smile. Steve's joy was contagious, and by the way, everyone looked at him like he had grown a second head, they didn't see him smile or laugh all that often, which was a shame because his smile was beautiful. His eyes crinkled and his white teeth gleamed. "Come on, let's get your cuts cleaned up." His hand was pressed on the small of my back, leading me up to the doors, and when he ripped open the glass door, I was assaulted by music, smoke, and so many different alcohol scents I wanted to throw up. The bar quieted when Steve entered, and I shuffled behind him, suddenly terrified and unable to hide it.

"Prez is back!" A voice called from the back of the bar and everyone cheered, beers sloshed onto the floor and I collided with the man behind me when girls squealed, rushing to Steve.

The cold metal of the man's fingers on my hip startled me, a quiet yelp leaving my lips at the feel. "Sorry," I tilted my head back to look at him, he was beautiful too. What the hell was in the water here? "They're always a little cold after a ride, I'm Bucky, VP of this shithole." He gave me a cheesy grin and I couldn't help but smile back at him. "I'm also Steve's best friend. Sorry about all of them," I tilted my head back to where Steve had his hand curled around a blonde woman's hip, she was pretty, they all were. I had never considered myself to be unattractive, but I felt it when I was surrounded by all these women who were so confident, with their skin-tight shirts and their leather shorts. I wished I had that.

I whirled around, ready to run but Bucky placed a hand on my shoulder, he was tall. I only reached his chest, and that was because my shoes had a bit of height to him. "Don't," I looked up to where Bucky was watching Steve, his jaw set, and when I turned to look over his shoulder, Steve was watching me out of the corner of his eye while a woman kissed him. He wasn't kissing back but it made me blush all the same, I felt like I was witnessing something I shouldn't be.

"Will you help me clean up then?" My voice was barely heard over the bass of the song playing. It seemed to rattle the walls, and no one seemed to care. But I was overwhelmed, I was exhausted and my palms were stinging from their scrapes. "Please, I won't bother anyone after that, you don't even have to help me, just show me a first aid kit, I'll do it myself."

Bucky offered a genuine smile, and his eyes showed so much kindness my knees went weak. "Sure bun," I rolled my eyes, what was with all the nicknames, I told them my name didn't I? No, I just told Steve and he still called me princess instead of it. "Let's go."
