I was three beers deep before someone brought up Aspen.

And the person who brought her up happened to be the blonde draped across my lap. Sharon and I had been hooking up for months now, and while I knew she wanted more from me, I would never commit. I may be what she wants and needs, but she's nothing but a pastime to me. She was easy, pleasured me well enough, and I could always count on her being there when I needed her. "What's the story with the basketcase upstairs?" Sharon asked, playing with my cut, her palms sliding down my chest and resting above my belt.

"I don't know, I almost ran over her, decided to help her out," I took a long drink of the beer, ignoring the anger that flared in my chest from Sharon calling her a basketcase, I hated how judgemental she was to new people. "I didn't ask questions, and her name is Aspen."

"Aspen," Sharon laughed, laying her head on my shoulder and I shook my head, taking another drink of my beer, I needed something stronger, it was getting harder to deal with the woman, "No wonder she's so cold."

"What's your excuse?" Sloane cut in and I had to hide a laugh with a cough because Sloane was the only person in the world who could get Sharon to shut up. Sloane was dating Bucky and has been since he found her nearly dead on the side of the road. We still don't know shit about her history, and we didn't want to, there was a reason she didn't talk about it. But Sharon didn't talk back to Sloane, rarely anyone did, Bucky was fiercely protective of her, if a man looked at her wrong you could count on a bullet being lodged in their skull, it was easier to stay on his good side. "And she's not cold, she's sweet and scared. You wouldn't know shit about that because you've never left everything you've known."

"Shut up Sloane," Sharon snapped and I watched Bucky's blue eyes turn icy, setting his sights on Sharon.

"If you don't get rid of her Prez, I will."

Sloane had a smug look on her face when I pushed Sharon off my lap, rolling my neck around before setting my gaze on her again. "I've told you so many times not to fuck around with Sloane, she outranks all of you, yet you still push her." I ran my hand down my face, suddenly exhausted, and when I looked at the clock I saw that it was already nearing two in the morning. "I'm going to bed, don't fuckin bother me."

The music was suddenly overwhelming, the smell of alcohol made my stomach roll and the smoke was suffocating. So before I heard any response, I pushed my way through the group of men lounging in my bar and made my way to the doors in the back. I hadn't seen Aspen since she disappeared with Bucky up to the apartments. I figured she would've been interested in the dynamic of the world she was suddenly thrown into. And I found that I was disappointed that she didn't, Sloane brought dinner up to her and we didn't see or hear from her again. My boots thudded against the wooden stairs as I climbed them, pushing my door open to an empty apartment.

Her shoes were by the front door, and her pile of clothes was tucked in the corner of the room by the foot of the bed. But Aspen was nowhere to be found, and when I spun around, I saw what spooked her. Because frozen on my screen was the eleven o'clock news, and Aspen's face was plastered on the screen. The headline was Billionaire's daughter has gone missing, $500k reward for finding her.

A draft of air came from the bathroom and I walked over to the door, seeing the window above the toilet open, there was no way she jumped from the second story. She may be reckless, but there's no way Aspen was that reckless. But then again, I didn't know her at all, so she could be. Instead of shutting the window, like I should've because now I was harboring a runaway, I found myself climbing onto the toilet and sliding out the window, holding onto the landing above me and lifting myself. If she climbed up this, she's got a ton of upper arm strength, it was impressive. I hefted myself onto the flat roof, expecting it to be empty, I figured she would've run.
