AS RORY MADE HER WAY to an empty seat towards the back of the class, her heart somewhat fluttered with nerves.

the classroom was buzzing with laughter, excitement and nobody seemed to notice her presence just yet amidst the noise.

the air in colorado felt crisper, more clean which was a stark contrast to the skyscrapers she once called home. she tried to steady herself a bit through inhaling deep breaths.

isaac was laughing away with a group of friends, at the back of the class, a blonde girl's arm placed around his shoulder in a somewhat flirtatious manner.

her eyes locked with his and his attention abruptly shifted. a grin tugged at the corner of his lips, transforming his expression into one of playfulness.

leaning forward on his desk, he subtly redirected his focus from the group to her, intrigued as she took a seat on the only available desk. right infront of him.

curse her luck.

"what's wrong baby?" the girl beside him asked loudly. her shrill voice rang in rory's ears and she rolled her eyes at her faux concern.

isaac didn't seem to reply, swatting her arm away, eyes glued at the back of rory's head.

"good morning class. settle down please, take your seats." a middle-aged woman wearing a yellow long sundress spoke as she walked into class.

"i was informed that we have a new student, uh- rory howard if you could please stand up and say a few words about yourself."

rory internally groaned, visibly uncomfortable at the prospect of being the centre of the attention.

she hesitantly stood up, feeling a bit out of place. she was always the confident girl who knew exactly what to say, but right now- at this moment she could feel her walls closing down on her and she didn't quite know why.

"hi, i'm rory howard and i just moved here from new york city so, yeah." she spoke, clasping her hands together.

the teacher nodded, raising her eyebrows at the mention of new york.

"welcome to colorado rory, i'm mrs. spock and i'll be your english teacher." she introduced, offering her a warm smile. rory simply smiled back out of courtesy and slowly sat back down on her desk.

her classmates seemed to be eyeing her not so subtly, curious at the sight of a new girl.

"hey, mary." isaac spoke in a hushed voice, catching her off guard. she snapped her head to the side, irritated at the nickname he seemed to stick to no matter how much she objected.

rory didn't need to respond- for he continued speaking, himself.

"how about you sit beside me rather than infront of me so that i can look at your pretty face better?" he whispered, his breath slightly fanning her neck. rory bit back a frown, annoyed at his player antics.

leaning forward on her own desk, she created a gap between her and isaac, choosing to focus on her teacher's words rather than the boy seated behind her.
