Ivy-Leigh Collins

I wake up to my mom beating me with a pillow.

She's screaming and knocking things over. She's drunk. Again.

"Where were you last night!" she yells.

"Mom calm down," I say as I grab the pillow from her hand. "I was in my room reading."

Her eyes narrow. "No, you weren't. Don't lie to me, young lady. I saw you sneak in this morning"

I wasn't lying. Last night I re-read Better Than the Movies. I love that book.

I turn over to the clock and my eyes widen, "Mom, it's 3 am"

She glares at me, "And you've even set back the clocks to trick me". "I know what I saw.

"I have no clue who you saw sneak into our house but it wasn't me", I say without thinking.

"Don't give me the sass. I'm tired of you sneaking out every night", she says.

"I'm tired too, IT'S 3 IN THE MORNING", I yell

Bad idea.

"Don't give me that tone", she challenges.

"Mom, I don't want to fight. I just want to sleep", I sigh

"And here you are making me the bad guy, acting like you're innocent. Your a horrible daughter", she yells

That hurt.

I opened my mouth to say something but nothing came out.

"I wish I never had you. Then your father would still be here.", she says with a disgusted look on her face.

That hurt way more.

My eyes stung with tears,"Mom, please go away".

"No, you'll go away. Pack your bags.", she states

"I don't know what you saw but it wasn't me. You know I can't afford tuition with the cost of an apartment or dorm.", I plead

"My decision is f-final.", she slurs and walks out.

I wipe my tears and pull out my phone.

Alia 😘

I throw practice clothes and a toothbrush into a duffel and start towards the kitchen.

Grabbing my keys, I walk out the door.

I knock on Alia's door. I love her house. It feels way more like home than mine does. Her parents are so encouraging and sweet. They've given me more in a month than my mom has in years.

She wasn't always like this. She used to be my best friend, always listening to what I had to say, and always helping me through my problems. But ever since the incident with Dad, she acts like I'm just scum on her sho-
