How could I refuse? I jumped down from the windowsill and pushed past the other Deckers. I had never felt more elated in my life. As I galloped through my hallway and stumbled down the stairs, the only thing that was on my mind was Matt. Taking care not to slip on the shards of glass that littered the space at the end of my stairs, I threw open the front door. The sunlight was almost surreal in its intensity as it struck my face- like I had been trapped in a cave for my entire life. I stepped leisurely over the dead bodies and lonely guns only to fall into Matt's arms. As soon as I got my arms around him, I couldn't have let go even if I'd died. He curled his arms around my waist and shoulders, placing a warm, reassuring hand on my head.
"It's alright now, love. I'm here, it's over."
The first thing I wanted to do was cry, but I also wanted to laugh and scream, so instead I just made a strange choking sound and buried my face into Matt's chest as tightly as I could. I heard a chuckle rise from his chest before his head rested on mine. I pulled back enough to look at him and he smiled playfully at me.
"Will there ever be a time I see you when you aren't mucked up, love?"
"Huh?" I cocked my head before taking a good look at myself. I was covered in dust and soot and blood, my hair was a matted mess, and I had cuts on my hands and arms from God knows what. I chuckled as I recalled the last time I had gone to see him, also covered in cuts, soot, and blood. I shook my head and grinned. "These past few days have been kinda different for me." I said, pulling away from him to leave his hands clasped around mine. Matt laughed quietly and agreed before planting another kiss on my forehead.
"Do you need to get anything more from your house?" He asked as we both turned toward the rubble of what was once my front porch. I nodded and headed toward the window that had been blown open just moments before, taking care to avoid the shards of glass and crumbles of drywall that were scattered all over the floor. I lead Matt up the stairs, past the photo wall in the hallway and into my room. It was a filthy mess; clothes lie half-packed and half crumpled in a little dejected pile at the foot of my bed, the blanket that I was folding before the police assault was flipped over the side of the bed, and a mixture of trash and debris was scattered around the soft grey carpet. I was embarrassed to say the least, but when I looked at Matt for a 'holy shit, you live HERE?' reaction, he seemed more... enchanted. His eyes were wide in amazement as he did a slow turnaround, looking at every little corner of my room. The Nyteblade posters, my Stillwater Elementary graduation cap and certificate, a big banner from Murderbrawl XXVI with Killbane on it -he didn't seem super amused with this one- all hung from the dark purple walls. My chair and desk were white, stained with the relics of school projects long forgotten, and sat beneath the now dust-covered curtains, both of which had been sailing in the breeze pulled in from my broken window not too long ago. He had this look of childish amusement on his face when he turned back to me, a grin slowly spreading across his face.
"It's like I'm dreaming." He said. "I've seen this room so many times on my monitor- through your webcam, it's just hard to believe that I'm actually standing here with you. It's like I'm on a TV set!"
I couldn't help but blush; I felt the heat rising to my cheeks as I looked into his eyes. A small smile made its appearance on my lips. "Surreal, huh?" I said. "I never thought I'd actually get to meet you, or that we'd be, like... Together." Matt pulled me in for another tight embrace. "You know," he said, giving me a curious glance, "when I hacked your school records, it showed your name as 'Unregistered'. It was strange, that's not your name, is it?" His tone was incredulous, but I just shook my head. "That stupid system has had me as 'Unregistered' ever since we moved here. My name is actually-"A sharp, protesting 'meow' caught my attention, and when I realized what it was that had made the sound I jumped to my feet. "Kitty?!" I pleaded, bolting for the closet door. I threw it open and peeked inside, but there was no sign of my cat. I started throwing boxes and papers out of my closet in desperation, I jumped up to look on the very top shelves; I tore my closet apart but I couldn't find my sweet little cat.
