Alex and Luke nestled comfortably on the aged porch swing, the rhythmic creaking of the chains adding a soothing cadence to the evening air.

Around them, Luke's backyard was bathed in the warm glow of the setting sun, casting long shadows across the neatly trimmed lawn and blooming flower beds. With a gentle breeze rustling through the leaves of the nearby trees, they shared a moment of tranquil serenity, lost in each other's company.

Alex absentmindedly twirled a strand of her hair as Luke reached for her hand, intertwining their fingers.

A stream of water drenched them both, Alex and Luke jolted. The mischievous cackle of Xavier, Luke's younger brother, emerged from behind the bush. "HAHA! I GOT YOU GOOD!" he exclaimed triumphantly, a mischievous gleam in his eyes.

Startled by the sudden dousing, Alex leaped up from the swing, her heart racing with annoyance. With a swift pivot, she darted indoors, her footsteps echoing across the wooden floor as she counted the seconds in her head.

Breathless, Alex burst into the bathroom just as her countdown reached its climax. With a gasp, she stumbled forward, her legs entwined in a swirl of  and scales, her human form giving way to a vibrant orange mermaid tail that cascaded onto the tiled floor. As she lay there, stunned by the transformation, the realization of her secret sank in.

She grabbed a towel, and dried off, her legs returning.

She walked out of the bathroom. Luke was staring at her.

"Whats going on with you?" He crossed his arms.

"Nothing." Alex said.

Her phone binged, and she flipped it open. "I gotta go. Its Cleo."

She walked around him, but he continued.

"Since when have you started hanging out with Emma Gilbert and Cleo Sertori?" He asked.

"We did a project together, and became friends. I'll text you later, okay." She kissed his cheek, and walked out.

Emma, Alex, and Rikki sat on Cleo's bed.

Cleo walked out of her en suite. "This is a catastrophe of the highest order. Moisturiser is mainly water."

"If dolphins can swim for miles, so can we." Rikki said.

"We can't moisturise ever again." Cleo exclaimed.

"We could swim all the way to Fiji. Could you imagine that?" Rikki continued.

"Our skin will be dry and wrinkly. We'll be geriatrics by the time we're 21." Cleo added.

"I missed training today. The first time in six years." Emma said.

"See? See how bad this is? We have to tell somebody. Our parents? A doctor?" Cleo continued.

"And end up a mermaid in a strait-jacket with moisturised skin? Forget it." Alex stated.

"Alex's right, Cleo. We can't tell anyone." Emma agreed.

"Not even Mum?" Cleo asked.

"No. No parents." Alex added.

"But I tell Mum everything." Cleo said.

"Well, not this time. It's too dangerous. People just won't understand. We could be locked up." Alex replied.

"Why would we be locked up?" Cleo asked.

"Because we're different? Because we can do things that other girls can't do? Because they're scared of us?" Emma added.

"Fine. I won't tell anyone. Except Lewis." Cleo said.

"No, Cleo. Not Lewis. Not anyone." Rikki responded.
