i. Lucena Accetta was a complicated girl, she had always known that. Born from the darkest of nights, she still longed to shine like the brightest of suns. The shadows she was created from clung to her like the thickest of blankets, threatening to swallow her completely, along with any luminosity that dared try to brighten her up. Even then, all that darkness was never truly hers alone- the darkness was her mother's and her father's much more than it ever belonged to her.

Dante Accetta, a man more complicated than his daughter could ever be, had unknowingly- or maybe he knew all along -spread his own misery and infected her with it, he had dimmed most of whatever light five-year-old Lucena possessed and replaced it with his pain- and like the good daughter she was, she took it all and made it her own just to spare him from it. But a small child can only take so much before it becomes too much, and Dante stayed drowning his darkness in the bottom of a Smirnoff Vodka bottle or an half-empty sheet of Xanax pills while young Lucena continued to slowly drown within herself.

Sometimes she wondered what she had done to make her father so miserable, especially towards her. Maybe it was because she wasn't biologically his? It made sense when she thought about it. She was just a random girl who was dropped on his doorstep when she was only a few days old, she became a responsibility and nuisance that he never signed up for, or ever wanted in the first place, in any shape or form. Or maybe she was just too much? Diagnosed with both dyslexia and ADHD, but refusing to take medication for the latter made school work a lot harder than it necessarily had to be, and Dante made sure she knew it. Lucena just didn't like how drowsy the medication made her and how dry it made her mouth, she couldn't help it.
