my dad left when I was born

my mom raised me on her own

worked three jobs

I never really saw her.

she died five years ago

and I didn't have anyone

I started hanging out with bad people

they handed me a cigarette one day

'try this' they said. 'it'll make you feel a whole lot better'

so I did

and it did

it took away the pain

the bills

the stress

the schoolwork

even just for an hour

and I haven't been able to quit

because I rely on it so much, I say

Wednesday I'm sorry, he says

it's alright, saturn, I say

I'm still going to help you stop smoking, he says

okay, I say

I'll be your cigarette, he says

okay, I say
