After two very busy and intense weeks finals were finally over. Thank god. But now it was the end of the semester and for the first time she wasn’t all that happy about going home for three months. Don’t get her wrong she was very excited about seeing her family again and missed beignets like crazy but… she had a friend now. And she was kinda gonna miss their end of the week catch up dates. She had a phone in New Orleans but she knew that Josie didn’t yet and calling Dr. Saltzman’s number just to talk to her was too weird. The thought of just buying her one had crossed her mind but she had dismissed it quickly, she didn’t want to look like a desperate loser with no friends, even if she was a desperate loser with no friends, well, one friend.
But then she remembered! Hey, magic is a thing we have, doofus. So she decided to teach Josie the spell her aunt Freya taught her that can make notes appear in other people’s pockets and fortunately she had readily agreed. That’s what they were doing now, the day before she was set to leave. They were by the lake at the place where Hope usually had her morning training sessions.
“It’s like texting but magic,” Hope was saying. “Just concentrate on the person you want it to get to while you say the spell and the paper should appear in the person’s pocket.”
She watched as Josie wrote something in a piece of paper and then closed her eyes to focus, seconds later the note disappeared.
When a minute passed and Hope didn’t get anything she asked curiously, “Who did you send it to?”
“Lizzie,” Josie says. “I asked her to make me a sandwich.”
Hope laughs at that. “Well good, if she does you’ll have to share so I can see what all the fuss is about, but I was thinking more along the lines of you sending it to me so we know if it worked,” she says lightly.
She sees a blush appearing on Josie’s cheeks as she says, “Right, of course that makes sense.”
“Try again,” Hope says chuckling. She sees Josie write something down and close her eyes again. A moment later she feels something appearing in her pocket and she takes it out. The note said,
Just for doubting my abilities I won’t share my sandwich with you.
Hope snorts a bit and says, “I didn’t doubt you I just wanted to make sure.”
“Sure, sure, whatever you say Hermione,” Josie says.
Hope groans, “I’m never gonna live that down, am I?”
“Never,” Josie says giggling. “It’s forever burned in my mind.”
She rolls her eyes and says, “Whatever, speaking of burning though, that’s another way to send a message,” Hope says and notes Josie perking up at that. “You look excited by the mention of fire Jo, something I should know?” she asks with a teasing smirk.
Josie just rolls her eyes and motions for her to go on so she does. “The spell is a bit different but everything else is almost the same; you just burn the note and concentrate on where you want it to go.”
Josie goes through the same things as before but they both realize at the same time that they don’t any have matches to burn the paper. She’s about to tell her a fire spell she could use when Josie just closes her eyes and whispers, “Ignalusa,” and the note immediately catches fire before disappearing as it’s consumed by it.
The note doesn’t appear anywhere close to them so she assumes she send it to her sister again.
“Well, I was about to offer up ‘Incendia’ but I guess that one works too, maybe I should be worried,” Hope says teasing but asks, “Where did you learn that one though?”
