I smiled to myself, repeating one of my mother's lullabies in my head.
I cracked the white surface, trying to turn around to find a more comfortable position.
I was later told that that was actually birth. Although I remember every single bit of it, I've never really understood the way we Eians are born. Contrary to what pictures show, it's not painful at all.
Humans believe we are born like birds: hatching from an egg. They are right.
I shook off the last pieces of the white stuff and tried to look around me. Too much light for my liking. I stopped looking around me and then just stared at my own hands. Human hands. I suddenly felt pain throughout my back. I streched out my arms and felt my wings unfold for the first time.
I stood up, shivering.
"She's hatched! she's hatched!" - i heard a feminine voice shout in the distance.
I could only distinguish a winged figure racing towards me. I panicked, and tried to turn away and escape, only to realise seconds later this other creature meant no harm. I would later learn that this other Eian was my not much older sister, Evangeline.
She picked me up as my vision started to focus on small things. A hole in a wooden wall, a door, several pieces of furniture.
"Quick! They'll be here any minute now! We need to leave!"- i hear another more mature voice shout at my sister.
As well as my sight, my hearing was getting better. I felt people rushing all around me, carrying bags. Suddenly, as Evangeline entered the room carrying me in her arms everybody stopped moving and came closer to see me for the first time.
"She's beautiful."- i heard a voice i knew too well say. My mother. She had been singing lullabies to me for... The whole time i had been in my egg. She had the most beautiful singing voice i had ever heard, and it was also the only one so i couldn't really compare it to anybody else's. Nevertheless i new it was beautiful."We have no time for this. If they get to us before we leave, we won't even have the time to name her before she is taken away." -complained my father.
"But neither of us can fly! She can't even walk!"
"That's why we are leaving The Woods. It will be easier for us to blend in between humans."-he answered, showing us a long brown coat.
He made my mother turn around, and i could clearly see that her gigantic golden wings had been folded down thoroughly under some type of harness.
He helped her fit the coat but you could still see that her shoulders had some big bumps on both sides. She just let her beautiful black hair down, covering the top part of the coat.
My sister left me on the ground, trying to fold her wings tightly. My father came close and helped her put the coat on.
While they were all helping each other out i turned around to find a mirror standing behind me. I stared at myself. Black hair, green eyes, pale skin.
I looked like a four year-old human child. I forced myself to stand up. It took me a while, but i finally succeeded. I turned around smiling, but only my mother noticed my achievement. She smiled back.
She grabbed a blanket and tied my wings with it. It seemed we didn't have coats that were small enough for me. She picked me up.
"Quick,quick,quick!"-shouted my father while grabbing things. All my family seemed to be in a rush to leave the house, but i still had no idea why or where we were going.
I knew what the human world was. Boring , grey and wingless people who didn't really care about their environment. The only thing i thought they actually did right, was something they called movies, Disney movies. Anyway, Eians take care of our trees, where we live. They grow at an extremely slow pace and only in a special place we like to call The Woods, were humans are too afraid to go. I don't understand why they are scared of our lands, for our trees grow as high as those tall buildings they call skyscrapers. They should feel at home, like us. In the end, that's were we all came from, the woods.
My mother carried me all the way down to the basement, were my father opened a door that led to stairs. We were all leaving.
After nearly forty-five minutes of just climbing down stairs my mother got tired of carrying me (i figured i was very heavy), and passed me onto my father's arms. But in that moment we realised there were no more stairs. We had reached the bottom. My dad pushed a door I couldn't really see and suddenly light came flooding into the cavity of the trunk. I couldn't see at first, but when my eyes adjusted to the bright light I just stared in amazement at my surroundings. My sense of smell had not really been stimulated since i had just left my nest, and rather quickly i had to admit.
Bright colours everywere, green grass, flowers and... Something my father shouted..Royal Guards?
My whole family started running towards a squared-shaped thing that my mother called a car, and somehow we all got into it before these Royal Guards reached us. They were all dressed in blue and had different types of wings:white wings, brown wings, even some blue spotted wings! They all came flying towards us with pointy spears shouting something about the Prince's orders...
The car started moving very quickly and I felt like I was going to throw up.
Instead, I started to feel dizzy and extremely tired.
"I know you,
I walked with you once upon a dream.
I know you,
The gleam in your eyes is so familiar a gleam..."
As my mother started to sing one of those Disney songs, i finally collapsed on my sister's shoulder.
