It was supposed to be a simple gathering of friends, a chance to catch up over pizza and drinks. But when Emily's ex-boyfriend unexpectedly showed up at the party, things took an unexpected turn.
As Emily greeted her friends at the door, she felt a knot form in her stomach at the sight of Jack, her ex, standing in the doorway. She hadn't seen him since their messy breakup a few months ago, and the memories of their tumultuous relationship came flooding back.
Trying to keep her composure, Emily led Jack inside, hoping to avoid any awkward encounters. But before she could say anything, her roommate, Mark, stepped forward, his expression darkening with anger.
"Emily's with me now," Mark declared, his voice tinged with possessiveness.
Emily's heart skipped a beat as she looked at Mark, her cheeks flushing with surprise. She had never expected him to say something like that, especially not in front of her ex.
Jack's eyes narrowed as he looked between Emily and Mark, his expression unreadable. For a moment, the room was filled with tense silence, broken only by the sound of distant music and muffled conversation.
Then, Jack spoke, his voice cold and clipped. "I see. Well, I'll leave you two alone then."
With that, he turned on his heel and disappeared into the night, leaving Emily and Mark standing in the doorway, their hearts racing with adrenaline.
As the door closed behind him, Emily turned to Mark, her eyes wide with disbelief. "What was that all about?"
Mark shrugged, a sheepish smile playing on his lips. "I couldn't stand seeing him look at you like that. I wanted him to know that you're mine now."
Emily felt a warm flush spread through her body at Mark's words, a sense of relief washing over her. In that moment, she realized that maybe their relationship was more than just friendship after all.
As they rejoined the party, Emily couldn't help but feel grateful for Mark's unexpected declaration of affection. And as they laughed and danced the night away, she knew that no matter what the future held, she was glad to have him by her side.
