Barely Above A Whisper

Chapter 3 Part 2

Vera's POV:

     I didn't call him.

     For the obvious reasons that we belong to different social backgrounds, and I was scared, scared that he would either ruin me or end up getting ruined.

     None of which would do me any good, after the class, I quietly made my way out, being careful not to bump into the throng of sweaty teens.

     I made my way out of the school building and began the long walk back to hell, it would have been a slightly tolerable walk of only I didn't have the tingling feeling that I was being followed, I looked back carefully and cautiously, but I didn't see anything out of the ordinary.

     I decided to brush it off as me just being paranoid. I kept walking, still feeling like I was being followed but I decided to ignore it. On getting to the house, I could see his car parked out in the driveway. My heart pounded in my chest as I slowly and cautiously approached the house.

     "Today is your last day on the surface of the earth". He marched towards me with an expression of rage marring his features, (even though his features have never been pleasant). I tried to run back in the direction I came, but he was too fast, he grabbed me before I could move.

     He dragged me into the house and locked the door with the key, he dragged me upstairs and opened the door of my sorry excuse of a room, threw me inside, and locked it from outside. I pounded on the door for him to let me out but my obvious struggle and plea fell on deaf ears, by now I was crying.

     His footsteps faded away as.i slowly slid down the door, the sobs racking my body making me unable to breathe properly. My vision was blurred and I could see flashes from my past.

     His footsteps sounded again and I could hear the sound of him pouring liquid outside my door and all around. PETROL. My eyes widened in horror.

     Oh no. This is not happening.

     I pounded on my locked window, hoping to get the attention of any passerby, but luck wasn't on my side coz no one passed by at the moment.

     I felt the fire before I saw it, the heat was seeping through the space between the door and the floor, I heard the sound of the door slamming shut and I knew that this was the end for me. The fire by now had engulfed my door and was slowly surrounding me. My head pounded and my eyes threatened to close shut.

     I felt lightheaded and I didn't know when I fell down on the ground as I accepted my fate and let the flames and the darkness engulf me.

     "Mommy!!" 6 year old me screamed as I jumped into my mother's waiting arms.

     "Oh my baby". She gushed at me.

     " I thought you weren't coming back, I was scared that daddy will hurt me without you around". I said with a year filled voice as I snuggled into her neck, "Oh Vera, you know I'd never leave you alone". Her voice cracked towards the end.

     "Promise??" I asked her, still unsure of whether or not she meant what she said, "I promise baby". She assured me and I smiled a toothy grin at her. She looked at me with tears in her eyes and kissed my forehead.

     "Come on now, let's go get ice cream". She said as she balanced me on her hip. "Yay!!!! Ice cream!!!" I said happily, a smile on my face as my mom just laughed at me and week went to the ice cream shop.

     I felt a muscled arm around me as I was lifted out of the flames and out of the house. I opened my drowsy eyes a bit to see who it was that was carrying me, it was Adrian.

     I pulled his shirt to get his attention. "You're awake!!", he said in a relieved tone of voice " Just stay with me, don't sleep, everything will be just fine". He warned and assured me, but it was too late, I had already accepted the darkness a second time.
