VI. Full Immersion

That night, June dreams that she's walking through a narrow hallway. The floor is tiled. The walls are white. The ceiling is popcorn, crinkled. The only sound in the entire rom is June's sneaker-clad feet scuffing against the freshly mopped floor.

This isn't right. Something about this isn't right.

Fluorescent lights flicker overhead, and, on the ground, June's shadow flickers, too. It's eerie. At the end of the hallway, there's a metal door, painted white to match the walls. It's slightly ajar, and June wonders if she left it that way or if her mother had cracked the door open to keep an eye out for her.

Don't go in there. Stop. You have to stop.

June smiles and keeps right on walking. One step, two steps, three steps, four. On some level, she knows that this is a dream, knows what she'll find when she opens the door ━ but she can't stop. Her body feels numb from the waist down. Her smile hurts, pulling apart her face.

She lays her hand flat against the metal door and pushes.

"June?"

Her mother stands there, dressed in blue. A breath catches in the Madden girl's throat ━ not because her mother is beautiful, though she is, and not because she's on the verge of scolding June for taking so long to report back on the crowd.

A vise closes in around June's lungs, because this is wrong. This didn't happen, and every single day, she wishes to God it had.

Please don't be a dream. Just this once, let it be real. Don't let it

"June?" Her mother stumbles backward. She falls. Blood turns blue silk red. It spatters against the walls, dark and crimson and unbecoming. There's so much of it ━ too much.

She's crawling in it, slipping, but everywhere she goes, the knife is there.

Hands grab at her ankles. June turns, trying to see her mother's attacker's face ━ and, just like that, her mother is gone and June is back at the door. Her hand pushes it open.

This is how it happened, she thinks dully. This is real.

She steps into the darkness. She feels something wet and squishy beneath her feet, and the smell ━ oh, God, the smell. She scrambles for the light switch.

Don't. Don't turn it on, don't

June wakes with a start.
