II. The Program

It takes Juniper two days, but ━ eventually ━ she calls the number. Of course she does, because even though there's a ninety-nine percent chance this is some kind of hoax, there's always that one percent that it isn't. And that's enough incentive.

June doesn't realize she's holding her breath until the ringing stops, and someone picks up.

"This is Carter."

June can't pinpoint what is more disarming ━ the fact that this "Agent Carter" apparently gave her the number to his direct line, or the way he answers the phone, like saying "hello" would have been nothing but a waste of breath.

"Hello?" As if he can read June's mind, Special Agent William Carter speaks again. "Anyone there?"

"This is Juniper Madden," she says, trying to keep her voice even. "June."

"June." Something about the way Agent Carter says her name makes her think that he'd known before she'd said a single word that she doesn't usually go by her full name. "I'm glad you called."

He pauses, waits for her to say something else. She doesn't. Everything you say or do is a data point you put out there in the world, and she doesn't want to give this man any more information than she has to ━ not until she knows what he wants from her.

"I'm sure you must be wondering why I contacted you ━ why I had Chris contact you."

Chris. So now the boy from the diner has a name. She wonders if it's just Chris, or if he shortens his name, too.

"I have an offer I'd like you to consider."

"An offer?" It amazes June that her voice stays every bit as calm and even as his. It's a complete juxtaposition from the best of her heart, much too fast and hard against her ribs.

"I believe this is a conversation best had in person, Miss Madden," the man says. "Is there somewhere you would be comfortable meeting?"

Clearly, he knows what he's doing ━ letting her pick the location, because if he'd specified one, she might not go. She probably should refuse to meet with him anyway, but she can't ━ for the same reason she picked up her phone and called instead of throwing the business card in the trash and never thinking twice.

Five years is a long time to go without a body. Without answers.

"Do you have an office?" she asks.
