≦◇Chapter One◇≧
Gabby was in the midst of cleaning her room, her task made a little easier by the one-hour loop of "Fool" by Frankie Cosmos playing in the background. She hummed along, "Your name is a triangle, your heart is a square. I love to see you, way over there," her voice blending with the soft, melodic tune. The peaceful routine was interrupted by the sharp trill of her phone ringing. Gabby glanced at the screen to see Malasai’s name flashing.
"Hey, Gabs! Can I come over? My parents won’t stop fighting," Malasai’s energetic voice boomed through the speaker, tinged with distress.
"Since when have you ever needed permission to come over here?" Gabby replied, half-joking, though her concern was genuine.
"Okkkk, I’ll be there soon. Max is coming too!" Malasai’s voice was already fading as she hung up abruptly. Gabby shook her head, smiling at the abruptness. The song "Fool" resumed playing, as if it had been waiting patiently for the call to end. With Nala at her friend’s house and their parents away on a business trip, Gabby had the house to herself.
Deciding to be a good host, Gabby went to the kitchen and started making ramen. She was just setting the steaming bowls on the dining table when the doorbell rang with a series of enthusiastic dings. Gabby went to the door and opened it, only to find Max still ringing the doorbell.
"When are you going to stop that?" Gabby teased, trying to stifle her laughter.
Max burst into a fit of giggles. "Come on, get inside! I’m starving."
Gabby led her friend to the dining room. "I’ve got ramen ready for you," she announced.
"OOHH YEAHH," Max said with exaggerated politeness before dashing to the table.
First Person Perspective
I wrapped my arms around Malasai as she walked in. "How have you been?"
"Well, good, except for the headache of my parents fighting," Malasai replied, her voice carrying a note of frustration.
"Alright, head to the dining room and dig in. Let me know if I need to make more," I said, guiding her to the table. Malasai slid into a seat next to Max, who was already happily slurping her ramen.
Just then, my phone buzzed with a message from Su-Byeok. I hurried upstairs to grab it and sat down on the steps halfway down. I read the message and then turned to Max. "Hey, Max, can Su-Byeok come over for a bit?"
"Sure, it’s your house!" Max replied between mouthfuls of ramen.
I looked over at Malasai. "Malasai?"
"Yeah, I don’t care!" she said, already lost in conversation with Max.
"Alright, kids, he’ll be over in about twenty minutes," I said, sitting down at the table and placing my phone beside me.
"You know, Gabs, you’re an amazing cook!" Max said, looking at me with admiration.
"Thank you, love," I replied, slipping into a posh accent for fun.
After finishing my meal, I collected the empty bowls and carried them to the kitchen on a tray. Just as I set the tray down, there was a knock at the door.
"MALASAI, CAN YOU GET THAT?" I called out.
"Yeahh," Malasai’s voice answered, followed by the sound of the door unlocking and opening. A moment later, Su-Byeok’s familiar voice greeted her. "Hey Malasai, where’s Gabs?"
Malasai pointed towards the living room, directing him to where we were all gathered.
