I jump awake from the sound of my alarms and quickly turn it off. I hate that sound but it's the only one that wakes me up. Today is supposed to be a free day for my sniper squadron. Besides the everyday tasks we have, we have the day to ourselves. I smile sleepily at the thought of not having to tear my muscles. I slide off of the bed and fold the edges of the blanket around the edges. I run my hand over the blanket to smooth out the wrinkles and fluff up my pillow. After making my bed I grab my uniform from the closest near me that I share with several other women. I put on my basic uniform which is just a camo overcoat with velcro and pants to match that. I stick the velcro together and grab my hairbrush. I don't need a mirror to see how my hair looks, I've memorized what my hair feels like when it's in the right place. I put a hair tie on my wrist just in case I want to put my hair up later, but for now I'll keep it out.
I look down at my watch. It's 8 a.m. I got to sleep for 4 extra hours and I really needed that. I trot happily to the mess hall hoping there's still some good left from breakfast. I'm almost skipping down the halls of the compound, I can feel that today is going to be a good day. I enter the mess hall, there's quite a few people there, mostly scattered out. I smile when I see there's still food left over. There are a few pieces of toast, eggs, and juice. Of course, the bacon is gone though. I make a small plate with a piece of toast and a small spoonful of eggs. I sit down at an empty table in the corner of the room and begin eating. "You forgot this last night." Archie walks up to me holding out my phone.
I look up at him with a smile, "Oh, thanks."
I take my phone from him and he sits next to me with a plate of his own. "You look happy today. Who did you kill?" Archie asks playfully.
I laugh, "No one."
"Oh, I'm sure..." He replies with a questioning tone, "No, but actually, what's got you in a good mood?"
"Well, I don't really have to do anything today except the everyday stuff."
"Ah, I see. Makes sense. So what are you gonna do with your time today?"
"I'm not sure yet. Maybe I'll-" I'm suddenly cut off by our captain. Captain Price.
"L/n, I want you outside on the sniper course in 15 minutes." He says in a gruff voice before walking away.
I squeeze my fists into tight balls as Archie laughs. "So much for an off day, huh?"
"Dammit." I groan, "This isn't fair. Today's supposed to be a free day."
I'm screaming in my head right now. "Well, I'm going to get ready. See you later."
I bid Archie farewell and grab my phone from the table before walking off. I exit the mess hall and walk the long, boring walk to my barracks. Then, I remember that price didn't even tell me what I need to wear. Do I need my Ghille suit? I open the door to the barracks and quickly get into my sniper uniform but, without the ghillie suit. I look at it hanging in the closet. I kind of hate it but love it at the same time. I close the closet door and adjust the patches on my uniform. I quickly put my hair into a neat bun and make my way to the armory where my precious baby... I mean, I sniper is. After gearing up and grabbing my rifle I rush to the sniper range. Price is already standing at the beginning of the course waiting for me. "There you are, l/n." The way he says it makes it unclear if he was being friendly or not, "The next few choices you make will determine the rest of your future. I've heard good things about you and this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."
"Umm... yes, sir?" I don't really know what he's talking about.
I guess I'm about to get promoted. "I want you to run this course."
"Just tell me when boss."
"Go on."
I've completed versions of this course before but not this exact one. I run to a thin metal wall and quickly load my gun. It's basically ASMR, the clicking sound that the rifle makes when I load it. I peer around the corner of the wall and quickly scan the treeline for targets. I immediately spot 7 about 500 feet away and 8 anywhere from 100 to 50. I take out the outliers first, the farther away I get the higher I have to aim on my scope. I'm only at 2 notches below the red dot sight right now. I move to an angle where I can take two out at a time. I lean my head down and peer through the scope of my gun and hold my breath to get a steady shot. Before I know it, I've already finished the course. I hear footsteps behind me and Price's gruff voice sounds again, "Nice work, soldier. Meet me in my office."
I smile and then sigh. Why is this guy always leaving with no time to meet him places? Price is a good man, he's always pretty happy and up for jokes, but he can be intimidating when he wants to be and he knows how to give orders. I make my way to Price's office, not bothering to stash away my rifle first. I make it to the office with the name "Price" engraved into a plate near the door and give 3 sharp knocks. I rock on my heels a bit as I wait for him to open the door. Why is he acting like I didn't get here 7 seconds after him? I roll my eyes a little. "Come in!" He shouts from the other side, his voice muffled.
I push the door open as it creaks on its hinges. "Take a seat." He gestures towards a black chair near his desk that looks like it belongs in a broke high school. I plop down and lay my rifle across my lap. The door swings shut behind me and clicks shut as Price begins to speak. "Have you heard of Task Force 141?"
"Yes, sir."
"You're a great soldier. You've got the talent, leadership, and intellectual abilities to outdo almost anyone... you're being promoted."
"To?"
"Task force 141, numb skull."
I don't say anything for a second and I just stare at him. I nod my head a little and my tongue nervously darts out to wet my lips. "Wow... thank you, but um, what does that mean exactly?"
"It means you'll be transported tomorrow to a base in Europe to meet up with the rest of the task force."
"Thank you so much, sir. I'll start packing right away."
Price nods as I quickly get up and leave. I have to tell... Archie. Oh, yeah... I'm going to have to leave. At least I have his phone number. I can feel myself tear up a little at the thought of having to leave him and probably never see him again. I blink my eyes rapidly to keep my tears away and I go to the barracks. I shove everything I own into my duffle bag. I go back to the armory and carefully pack my sniper rifle. As I walk down the hallway I pull out my phone and text Archie. "Where are you right now?"
He responds after a minute after I make it back to the barracks. "I'm in the lounge room, why?"
"I have some goodish news"
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"I want to come tell you in person."
"Ok"
I feel a dim sense of sorrow sinking into me. What if we grow apart and we're not friends anymore? I slowly plod to the lounge room. I instantly spot Archie and my sadness is immediately replaced with a huge smile. "What's up?" He asks calmly as he leans back on a couch.
"I've been promoted," I say with a little excitement.
"To what?" His eyes widen a bit as I explain.
"Well, I've been promoted to Task Force 141!"
"You're joking."
"I'm not!"
"Damn, girl! Good job. So what do you do now?"
"Well, now I have to relocate..."
"Oh?... When?"
"Tomorrow."
"That's sudden, isn't it?"
"Yeah, honestly I'm kind of sad."
Archie lets out a soft chuckle, "I'll be fine here. You just worry about yourself and all those hot guys you'll be kicking ass with."
I roll my eyes with a smile plastered on my face. He always knows how to make me smile. "Is it okay if I hang out with you before I go?"
"Yeah, why are you asking?" He says it like I've asked the stupidest question in the world.
I just shrug and plop down beside him. I let out a relieved sigh and pull my legs underneath me and onto the couch. I guess this won't be as bad as I thought.
