The desert sun beat down relentlessly as the dusty convoy of SUVs made its way along the desolate highway deep in the Nevada wilderness. Inside the lead vehicle, director Leona Briggs gazed pensively out the window, lost in thought. The endless sand and scrub was a stark contrast to the bustling studios and glittering parties that usually filled her days.
Beside her, presenter Fiona Mullerton studied a map, trailing a perfectly manicured nail along the route. “We should arrive at Ravenswood in less than an hour if we keep up this pace along Old Ghost Road. Kind of a foreboding name, isn’t it?”
Leona smiled tightly. “Let’s hope the name isn’t an omen. The network is sinking a small fortune into this documentary project. It needs to pay off.”
“Have you ever been there before, to Ravenswood?” asked Fiona.
“Once, a long time ago...” Leona’s voice trailed off. A silent darkness seemed to gather in her eyes for a moment as past memories stirred. Then she blinked and turned decisively toward Fiona.
“It’s going to be fine,” Leona said reassuringly, though it sounded more like she was attempting to convince herself. “We’ll wrap principal photography in a week or two, max. Get what we need and get out.”
Fiona nodded, fiddling with a strand of her long, chestnut hair. Leona gazed fondly at the presenter, drinking in her graceful features. An irresistible attraction had sparked between them from Fiona’s very first day at the station, though they had agreed to keep their passionate affair completely discreet.
The lead SUV crested a hill, and the forgotten mining town of Ravenswood suddenly sprawled before them in the valley below. Leona inhaled sharply--she hadn’t expected the view to hit her with such force after all this time. Fiona’s hand instinctively covered hers for a moment in reassurance.
Ravenswood’s dilapidated, weather-worn buildings crouched silently amidst sagebrush and Joshua trees. The glass windows reflected back the harsh sunlight like dozens of desolate, sightless eyes. As the team’s vehicles wound their way down the main street and pulled to a stop, an eerie quiet clung to the motionless scene. This ghost town had a dark gravity that pulled at the soul.
The crew clambered out, surveying their surroundings. Jake and Amy, the head camera operator and sound technician, immediately started unpacking equipment from the equipment trucks. Alice, the makeup and costumes artist, shivered and hugged her cardigan tighter around herself despite the heat.
“Are you kidding me?” she muttered. “We’re staying HERE for two whole weeks?”
“Scared, Alice?” Jake chuckled, though he also cast a wary eye towards the derelict structures.
The team had certainly arrived prepared at their home base for the Ravenswood documentary shoot. Their pop-up production trailers and support vehicles formed a miniature mobile studio amidst the abandoned buildings. But as the group began setting up base operations, they all felt the uncanny stillness that clung to the very air around them.
Leona conferred briefly with her production manager, reviewing preparations. She felt eager to throw herself into the work, anything to distract from the unease saturating her bones in this place.
