"Hurry up!" Mark hissed as we dragged the bodies through the woods. My heart pounded as we labored under the weight. Shadows flickered between the trees, casting everything in an eerie glow.
This was wrong. So wrong. But the panic and fear pounding through me kept my feet moving forward.
We burst into the clearing, the still black waters of the lake opening up before us. Mist curled along the surface. With a grunt, we rolled the bodies into the water. They landed with a splash and slowly sank from view.
I stood paralyzed, staring at the last ripples fading into the dark water. The guilt and panic rising inside threatened to choke me. Oh god, what had we done?
"We need to get out of here," Nina said sharply, her voice cutting through my spiraling thoughts. I tore my eyes away from the water and nodded. We had to leave no trace.
I followed the others wordlessly as we wound our way back into the dense forest, eager to put distance between us and the lake. But something was wrong. The woods looked unfamiliar, the landscape shifted. It was as if the forest itself had changed while our backs were turned.
"Are we going the right way?" Mike asked uncertainly. We paused, glancing around with dawning dread.
An icy tendril of fear crept up my spine. I didn't recognize this part of the woods at all.
We should never have come here.
A Twisted Path
We wandered for what felt like hours, desperately trying to find something familiar. But the forest only grew more foreign, more sinister. Every path we took led us back to the lake's dark waters.
Exhaustion and despair were setting in. Mike stared at the ground, his face pale. Nina paced in agitation, muttering under her breath. Only Mark seemed calm, his expression stony as he studied our surroundings.
A snapping twig jerked me alert, my nerves frayed to the breaking point. I whirled, searching the shadows between the trees. For a split second, I thought I saw a pale figure standing behind a trunk, watching us. Blinking rapidly, I stared into the gloom. Nothing.
I shuddered, pulling my jacket tighter around me. This place felt wrong. Like there was something here with us, toying with us.
"Why does it keep bringing us back here?" Mike burst out, his voice high with stress.
"There has to be a reasonable explanation," Mark said evenly. But his steady tone did nothing to ease the sick feeling in my gut. We didn't belong here.
Nina shook her head jerkily. “We need to get out of these damn woods."
As if summoned by her words, a pale wisp appeared at the lake’s edge. It slowly condensed into the flickering form of a woman in white, her long dark hair partially obscuring her face. She stood motionless, watching us. Waiting.
