It was a lovely and sunny day, very rare for this time of the year in New York. Normally it would be windy and completely unbearable. I thought that I’d go on a picnic but sadly I was stuck in an overcrowded Joe’s Java being suffocated by the strong smell of coffee beans and hairspray, which I’m assuming is coming from the high top pony tail cheerleaders two tables away from where I sat.
I strongly refrained from rolling my eyes at the scene of them giggling and flipping away at their hair, dammit I used to be one of those girls and I actually kind of miss it because adulting sucks and I’m pretty sure that I was about to get dumped right now judging by the constipated look on Drew’s face.
“So…” he said nervously tugging on his shirt collar.
I sat back, arms folded and arched my brow. He hadn’t said much ever since we sat down and by now I knew where this was going so I was impatient for him to get it over with so I could blow up on him, maybe I was exaggerating the whole thing in my head and he probably just wanted to talk to me about something else.
He cleared his throat then went to speak but the waiter chose that exact moment to make an appearance.
“Hey, I’m Lloyd and I’ll be your server today. Can I get you anything to drink?”
Drew looked annoyed at the interruption and glared at the waiter, he really was acting strange today, he was more easy going and relaxed but today he’s been tense. I took this opportunity to stare at him, his dark hair was messy like he’d been running his fingers through it and his buff frame filled out the shirt he wore pretty nicely.I could see the droplets of precipitation on his olive skinned face. He really wasn’t my normal type but my “type” wasn’t exactly doing me any good so I stepped out of that and dated the buff tech nerd Drew and over the past few months he has really surprised me, though he was acting really strange today. The waiter rushed away after being rudely dismissed by Drew.
“You’re acting weird babe, what’s going on? “ I asked actually feeling dread creep in hoping that my suspicions aren’t proved right.
“We should break up.” He blurted out.
I sat back in my chair, arms folded and just stared at him. I mean I had my suspicions but hearing him actually say it out loud kind of hurt.
“I said that I want to break up. I don’t think that this is working anymore Katleen.” He said coolly and I just sat there staring at him not knowing what to say.
Drew and I have been dating for over six months and we were really getting along well, he had met my family and I had met his, sure we were still working things out and moving at a slow pace but I really liked him.
After realizing that I wasn’t going to say anything, continued,
“I really like you but I can’t share you with Hudson anymore, you and him clearly have this weird thing going on and half the time I feel like I’m the third wheel when we’re all hanging out, just last week you ditched our date because he needed you for whatever. I would make you choose between the two of us but I know that it clearly would not work out in my favour, I really like you Kat but I’m not going to be a sitting duck and wait for you to realize that you’re in love with him then leave me..”
My eyes widened and I stared at him, he’s breaking up with me because of my best friend? What the hell? If I wasn’t so pissed I would actually laugh, sure Hudson and I were close but I always made time for Drew and why the hell had he not just talked to me about his feelings, this was such BS.
“Oh don’t give me that shit Drew.” I unfolded my arms and leaned in “You’re clearly using Hudson as an excuse to break up with me. If you wanted us to end you should have told me straight up.” I whisper yelled glaring daggers at him.
He sighed and went to say something but was yet again interrupted by Lloyd, the waiter bringing our drinks. I thanked him and he walked away with Drew staring daggers at him yet again.
“You shouldn’t be mad okay? If anything I’m doing you a favour, you and I both know that our relationship was temporary.” He paused then sighed “Sally called and I-“
I cut him off with a humourless laugh “Oh, so this is what this is really about? Your cheating ex girlfriend called you and suddenly you break up with me then try to pin it on my friendship with Hudson!?”I stood up then grabbed my purse and threw him a withering look when he tried stopping me from leaving by grabbing my wrist, I eyed the drink I had ordered and considered throwing it at his face but thought better of it.
“Men suck!” I said to the group of cheerleaders as I passed their table walking out.
I’m only twenty three, I thought. I don’t need to be in a relationship any way so screw that buttface Drew, pfft I hope he gets back with Sarah, Sandy- whatever the hell her name is and she cheats on him again or leaves him at the altar or something hurtful like that. After walking for a few minutes, I stood in the middle of the busy Manhattan street and started laughing hysterically, what a bloody joke.
I am a damn catch okay, I didn’t need Drew or any other guy, I should date my self actually! 23, graduated top of my class at Yale with my Accounting degree and had a really great job, hell I was the girl you married not dumped for your cheating ex.
