"Mom? Dad?" I called out as I entered through the front door of the house I grew up in. I decided to stop by my parents first before I went to pick up Amy.
"Katleen !" Dad said coming from the kitchen with a huge grin and his favourite apron on, "What brings you here?"
"Just thought I'd pop in, I'm supposed to pick up Amy to go prom shopping." I said and went to give him a hug.
He squeezed me tightly and I laughed then moved away from him, with the way dad was acting, you'd swear he hadn't seen me in weeks but honestly, I see him everyday at the office.
My dad, Leonardo and Hudson's father, Tom have been friends for years, abuelita used to work as Tom's mother's assistant back in the day at her boutique so dad and Tom go way back.
After college they decided to open a small business together, TayMo Enterprises which specialises in the hotel business. It has grown tremendously over the years, from a one small bed and breakfast to 27 large hotels worldwide. It is more of a family business so we all work there, well except for my mother, Gloria. She works as a lawyer and has her own practice.
"Where's mom?" I asked following him into the kitchen where I could smell fresh baked cookies.
Dad's baked goods were the best, even better than mom's who wasn't really that great of a baker anyway, she excels at cooking though.
"She's at a book club meeting." he answered handing me the tray of snickerdoodles.
"At 10am on a Saturday?" I questioned, "Aren't those normally held on Thursday?"
"She was working on that big case this week so they moved it." he answered as he turned to switch off the stove and take out the last batch of cookies.
"Just so you know, I'm taking a Tupperware full of those, Hudson would kill me if I didn't."
He laughed and immediately handed me a plastic container to fill with cookies.
"I'm glad you stopped by baby girl." he said as I made my way out the door. "I feel like I don't see you anymore."
"We work together dad." I said walking down the porch stairs.
"Yes, even so." he shrugged
"Okay well, I love you papa, thank you for these" I blew him a kiss then walked across the yard to the house next door to pick up Amy.
She squealed immediately when she opened the door and saw me holdinh the cookie filled Tupperware and I swatted her hand away,
"Ah, come on Kat."
"Nope, these are for Hudson." I said as we walked to the car I had parked in my parent's driveway.
"Of course they are. " she rolled her eyes.
I just gave her a smirk then climbed into the car and pulled out of the driveway. She began chatting about and I listened intently as we drove to the mall.
"Nope, No, Hell no, Not even." I immediately said as Amy came out of the dressing room wearing a short blue dress with a plunging neckline and was completely backless.
We have been at the mall for about an hour now and this was the fourth boutique we had been to.
"Why not?" She asked looking put off, "I actually like it" she turned to look at herself in the mirror.
"Let's see" I said then held up three fingers and rattled off three reasons why she shouldn't pick this dress. "One, Hudson would kill me, two, Hudson would kill me and three, did I mention that Hudson would kill me?"
"Fine" she huffed and headed back into the changing room.
"Adolescentes" I muttered in Spanish then sighed, she looked killer in the dress but honestly Hudson would kill me if he saw his sister wearing that "piece of material".
My phone buzzed, indicating a text.
Hudson: Where are you?
Me: Well hello to you too Hudson.
Hudson: You took my car didn't you? I can't find my keys.
Me: Yeah, I did. 😁
Hudson: You brat! Guess I'll call an Uber or something. Don't scratch my baby!
Me: I'll try not to.
Hudson: 🖕🏼
I laughed then closed the text. It's a good thing that I'm the only other one allowed to drive his car otherwise he would have flipped out, that man really loves his car.
Minutes later Amy came out in a red off the shoulder floor length dress with a thigh high slit and it looked absolutely stunning on her. Hudson's approval be dammed, this dress was amazing!
"This is the one" she said grinning and I nodded, giving her two thumbs up.
"You look gorgeous baby girl, absolutely stunning."
She bit her lip nervously and began tugging on the dress, "You think so?"
"100%! You look amazing, now go get that off so we can go grab some food, I'm starving."
She grinned then ran back to the changing room. I picked up the box of shoes the sales lady had suggested for the dress and headed to the till to pay. Shortly Amy joined me, her dress in hand and I paid for everything then we headed towards the food court.
She grabbed my hand and steered me in the direction of the small Italian pizzeria. We entered and were immediately lead to a booth.
"So, tell me Amy bear, how did Sam ask you?" I asked rolling up the sleeves of the
huge hoodie I was wearing."He used cupcakes to spell out 'Prom?' And I was like heck yeah! Plus the cupcakes were vannily, my favorite and they were really good and I was hungry at the time so." She shrugged.
"I like Sam already, bribe them with food, good strategy."
The waiter delivered the pizza and promptly walked away.
"I never heard about how Hudson asked you." She said taking a bite of her food.
I immediately laughed as the memory of that day flooded my mind.
"He got José to help him on how to ask me in Spanish but of course my brother's an asshole so instead of teaching Hudson how to say 'Will you go to prom with me' he taught him to say 'I'm a big fat chicken."
Amy burst out laughing "Oh my gosh, no wonder he never told me."
After the laughter subsided she looked at me seriously for a minute then shook her head with a small smile.
"What?" I asked cautiously after biting into the cheesy goodness.
"You and Hudson it's just...you know what never mind" she said smiling.
"Uh okay..." I arched a brow and she just shrugged and went back to eating her pizza.
