I arrive 15 minutes early, get my pass to enter the building, and head into the elevator after receiving instructions on where to go. Soon enough, I find my way to Miranda's office.
"Oh, you're 15 minutes early... better than the others so far. Now, what are you waiting for? Do you think she has all day?" A girl with red hair, who I can only assume is Miranda Priestly's first assistant, says. I simply nod and make my way into her office.
Miranda Priestly looks up from her computer, her hand sliding her glasses down the bridge of her nose as she examines me from head to toe. "Who are you?" she asks bluntly. "I'm Y/N, Y/N Y/L/N. I graduated from the best fashion school in the world. I have degrees in music, art, design, and, of course, fashion. I have a perfect memory and can handle pressure like no other," I respond confidently, even though deep down, I'm panicking. I place my CV and proof of my degrees on her desk. "And I believe I can not only survive but thrive as your assistant." Miranda continues cleaning her glasses, not paying much attention to me. "I'm confident that I can be exactly what you need. Working for you has always been my dream job. The opportunity to be your assistant is a dream come true for so many girls. But I'm not just dreaming about it; I'm ready to act on it," I say, trying to exude confidence despite my nerves. This catches Miranda's attention, and she looks back at me. "So, you know about Runway. You know who I am and how much I care about my job. You've got style, and it's clear you know a thing or two about fashion. But not everyone can have brains and good looks," Miranda says, glancing at my CV and evidence of my degrees. "Well, I suppose that's it." She slides the papers back to me and dismissively gestures for me to leave. "Thanks for your time."
Just as I'm about to head to the elevator, the red-headed girl rushes over, calling my name. "Where are you going? You're hired," she says before walking off. I quickly rush over, hang up my coat and bag, and get ready for this exciting new opportunity. "Got it! So, first things first, you and I are in charge of answering the phones. We can't afford to miss a single call, no matter what. When I take my breaks, you stay at your desk. And when it's your turn for breaks, I'll be right here, not leaving my desk for anything. And before you even ask, it's because Miranda absolutely despises voicemails," the red-headed girl explained. Just then, Miranda called out, "Emily!" As she looked at me, I quickly took my seat at the desk before she walked away. Ironically enough, a call came in right then and there.
I pick up the ringing phone and confidently answer, "Miranda Priestly's office." After a brief pause, I respond, "I'm sorry, but she isn't available at the moment." I wait for a response and then assure the caller. "Yes, I will definitely let her know you called." Setting the phone back down, I finish jotting down a note just as Emily returns. "Have you done this before?" she asks curiously. I let out a light laugh and replied, "No, I actually did some research before taking this job. I'm confident I can handle it without any guidance." I say it with a touch of bluntness, making it clear that I won't tolerate any annoyance from the first assistant. I made sure to be prepared.
As Miranda called out, "New girl," I quickly made my way into her office. She immediately gave me a list of tasks, including getting her 20 skirts and scarves from Calvin Klein and making sure her Starbucks was hot. I nodded, acknowledging her instructions, and left her office. Grabbing my coat, I headed to the elevator, putting it on as I walked.
In just 10 minutes, I returned with the scarves, skirts, and her hot Starbucks order. Placing everything on her desk, I noticed a different look in her eyes. Was she... surprised? I wondered to myself, but I didn't dwell on it. Leaving her office, I hung my coat back in the closet and took a seat.
As the day went on, with all those never-ending calls and Miranda constantly calling out to someone for tasks, I couldn't wait for the best part of the day – going home.
So, I make my way back to my cozy, medium-sized apartment, hang up my clothes, and head over to the living room. I flop down onto my comfy couch, ready to unwind after a long day. But, as luck would have it, before I can even catch a slight bit of relaxation, my phone starts ringing. I answer, and guess who it is? It's my friend F/n. They just had to ask if I got the job, and with a hint of cockiness, I confidently reply, "Of course, who could resist me?"
A couple of hours pass, and we finally end the call. I undress and get ready for bed. As I lay there in my cozy bed, I can't help but smile at everything I accomplished today. Maybe, just maybe, I'm perfect for the job. With that comforting thought, I drift off to sleep, looking forward to what tomorrow brings.
