𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬:mavis' part of this chapter has strikethroughs, so remember to look for that. it's written like shatter me.
(🌷) mavis always sensed something was off in her home. she sensed it before, she sensed it now, and she'll sense it for the rest of her life no matter how hard she tried to ignore it or drown it out. her family would always be missing s̶o̶m̶e̶o̶n̶e̶ something.
her toes smusshed into the back of her heel and she wedged off her jordan's, kicking to them to the side where her parents' shoes were too. mavis always stared at the spot for longer than she should. m̶a̶y̶b̶e̶ i̶t̶ w̶a̶s̶ b̶e̶c̶a̶u̶s̶e̶ t̶h̶e̶r̶e̶ w̶a̶s̶ t̶h̶r̶e̶e̶ p̶a̶i̶r̶s̶ m̶i̶s̶s̶i̶n̶g̶. maybe it was because it looked a little empty.
she passed by her mom sitting in the living room and her dad bent over the stove cooking dinner t̶h̶a̶t̶ s̶h̶e̶ w̶o̶u̶l̶d̶n̶'t̶ g̶e̶t̶ t̶o̶ e̶a̶t̶ that would only be enough for him and her mother.
this was p̶a̶i̶n̶f̶u̶l̶ normal.
"mavis."
her blood froze. s̶h̶e̶ w̶a̶s̶ u̶s̶e̶d̶ t̶o̶ b̶e̶i̶n̶g̶ i̶g̶n̶o̶r̶e̶d̶. she turned to her mother with hesitance.
"yes mom?"
"you're failing your math class," her mom's eyes didn't dare meet mavis' j̶u̶s̶t̶ l̶i̶k̶e̶ t̶h̶e̶y̶ h̶a̶v̶e̶n̶'t̶ f̶o̶r̶ t̶h̶e̶ p̶a̶s̶t̶ t̶w̶o̶ y̶e̶a̶r̶s̶ and she continued to watch the dirty carpet.
