Hey guys, welcome back. So, for those of you who skipped the last chapter because of the triggers mentioned, Mira's mother Miriam was chosen to be sacrificed to the monster Sirena summoned because of Queen Umina's hubris. Mira tried to stop her mother, but her father and brother stopped her and dragged her back home so she wouldn't get arrested for treason (Mira was flipping the bird the entire time she was dragged back home, lol). Mira cursed her father and brother out for blindly following Tiberius and Umina, and ended up grounded.
Now with the recap over, on to the story!

The next week, when Mira was finally allowed to leave the house, she snuck out to do her and her now late mother's weekly rounds of smuggling food and necessities to give to the homeless. A usually cheerful task, now made solemn and sorrowful without her mother's presence. As she finished, one of her friends, a mergirl about six months older than her named Naia went up to her, saying that there was going to be a meeting with all of the volunteers and asked her if she'd like to attend. Curious, Mira agreed.
Mira soon found herself at a cave on the outskirts of the village. She looked into the cave and saw the other members of the secret volunteer group, all sitting around a makeshift table at the back of it. As the meeting commenced, she was shocked to discover that the meeting was to discuss the topic of revolution, and (if they had one) who would lead it.
Mira was surprised by the turn of events. She knew that sneaking out and helping the poor the government refused to help was an act of rebellion in and of itself, why, her disruption and attempt to stop the Sacrifice Ceremony last week could've been considered as treason! But she didn't really expect that there'd be a full-on revolution any time soon. This was interesting.
She looked over everyone in the meeting, they were either in their mid-late teens, or full-grown adult; either way she was one of the youngest ones there. She mentally compared everyone to herself, noting how some were far stronger, older, wiser, or swifter than her. She looked over to Dylan, a beefy merman of roughly 30, strong enough to strangle a Great White. Then over to Doris, a slim, 50-year-old mermaid who organized the secret volunteer group. Even her own bestie Naia, who could outmaneuver and outswim even the swiftest of sea creatures. Surely, one of them would lead this rebellion.
They put it to a vote; everyone writing down the name of the person they felt would be the most adequate to lead the rebellion, then handing them to Doris to count them. After a few minutes, Doris announced that by majority vote, Mira would lead the rebellion (if she wished). Mira's head whipped around to look at the others like a flash, shock and confusion plastered to her face.
She asked why she was chosen, reminding them that she was in fact, one of the youngest ones there. To her surprise, the others told her that they made their decision based off of everything from her caring heart to her fiery spirit. But especially on her reaction to her mother being taken. These days, most merfolk would've held their tongue and mournfully let it happen out of either fear of repercussion or being brainwashed. The Sacrifice Ceremony had only been around for about five years and even then, Mira was the only one who had ever tried to stop it.
As Mira sat there listening to the reasons she was chosen, she remembered her mother's final words to her, and she felt something well up inside of her. She had matured quickly in the past decade, far beyond her years. 'There have been too many losses because of Tiberius and Umina' she thought, 'they're right. I'll do it. For mom, and everyone else in Mermosa who's lost loved ones to those tyrants.'
As she sat up tall and accepted this task, her companions didn't see a teenager who had just lost her mother, but a strong young mermaid, determined to make a change and insure it never happened again.
