Emma's POV:
That night I bid farewell to Friedhelm for what I had hoped would be a short amount of time until I saw him again. I mean Christmas is going to come so soon and then the war will be over and Germany will be victorious. I had thought. I was so naive back then. Oh how wrong I was. But I would learn that the hard way soon enough.
After my long goodbye to Friedhelm, he and Wilhelm left. Although accompanied by Charly as Wilhelm had offered to walk her back. Under pretence that a woman shouldn't walk home in the dark but we had all seen in his eyes, his longing to be with Charly longer before he had to say Goodbye. Greta and I had hoped that one of them would make a move on the walk back or when saying goodbye, but we wouldn't find out till the morning, when Charly would come barging into my my bedroom unannounced, complaining about a missing nurse head dressing.
"Emma I just can't find it anywhere, I don't know what I'm going to do!" Charly complained as she slammed my bedroom door shut in frustration, awakening me from my peaceful dreams. "What time is it?" I murmured lowly, annoyed at being awoken from my slumber. "Ermm 7:25 to be exact" she stated, glancing at her wrist watch. "What!? We don't have to leave until ten! Why are you here, fully dressed and ready to leave. I said be here by half nine!" I grumbled out, still tired and slighting hungover from the night before.
"Well to tell you the truth, I'm pretty anxious about today and the weeks and months to come, as I've never worked in a military Hospital before, and being so far away from home is difficult for me. You know I get home sick." Charly sighed as she fiddled with her fingers anxiously. "Yes but..." I started. "And your like my big sister! Who else was I supposed to go to. You know what it's going to be like!" She interrupted, as she finally looked into my eyes, making me feel guilty about being harsh when she was just worried. She had every right to be. She was not ready for what was to come. To be honest, I wasn't either. I thought it would be just like France. Oh how wrong I was again.
////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
After a while, we managed to locate Charly's nurses head dressing. Charly had proven more useful than I thought, as she helped me pack, which me being me, had saved till the last minute. With about fifteen minutes to spare before we needed to leave. Charly and I were sat in Greta's room watching her get ready for her meeting about last night. I know I will miss Friedhelm a lot but I think I'm going to miss Greta the most. She's my big sister and although we have been apart before, this time feels different. I had thought. I was right. This time would be different.
I was then drawn back from my thoughts into the conversation. "It won't be that bad, will it Emma?........ Emma?!" Charly said shaking a hand in front of my face. I then looked around the room and saw Greta's worried face staring at her reflection in the mirror and immediately knew what the conversation was about."Sorry. No Greta you will be fine I promise, there is no need to worry." I replied, reassuring my sister with a gentle smile. Admiring how beautiful and grown up she had become.
"You guys coming?" Greta said, making her way to the door, reminding us of the time. "He's just going to give you a real ticking off." Charly said as we stood up and collected our luggage. "And why should I report in personally then? Ive already testified." Greta questioned, as she walked downstairs and outside. "I'd come with you but sadly my train doesn't wait." I said regrettably as I looked up at my sister. "Its all right I'll manage." Greta said as she hugged Charly goodbye. "I'm sure you will" Charly said pulling away from their embrace.
She then turned to me. When our eye met we both just stood there. No words were needed to be spoken to convey how we felt. We could tell just by looking at each other. "Don't do anything stupid while I'm away." I said playfully with a hint of seriousness, as I pulled her in for a long hug. "I'm going to miss you so much." Greta whispered into my hair, as we held each other close. After a few moments I pulled away.
With a quick smile I turned away. Then just as I started walking away I heard Greta call out. "Charly!Emma!" We turned around. "How do I look" she said spinning around in a circle. Charly and I looked at each other. "Like a Film star!" We both grinned back. Turning around we then walked away. Little did we know life from then on would be very different. Nobody was ready for what was to come.
