CALISTA ASTOR
The invitation to Vanessa's family dinner at her mansion came as a surprise. But it was just what I needed to take my mind off the man who consumed my mind. She mentioned it was a small gathering, just close family and a few friends.
I was touched by the inclusion, knowing Vanessa's family was important to her. Only because she hated being alone with her family. They were always busy and when they did get together, they were always on her about her academics.
She had often spoken about her absent uncle, a mysterious figure who was rarely around due to his busy schedule and the past conflict between her parents. She still hasn't told me till this day what had happened between her parents and her uncle.
As I approached the grand entrance of the mansion, Vanessa greeted me with her usual warmth, her excitement palpable. "Calista, I'm so glad you're here!"
Vanessa was wearing a yellow sundress that matched with her blonde honey hair and blue eyes.
The evening started off with casual conversations and laughter. Vanessa's family was welcoming as usual even though they are barely around, making me feel at ease. As we moved to the dining room, the grandeur of the setting took my breath away. The table was elegantly set, with fine china and crystal glasses sparkling under the chandelier's light.
We were all sitting down at the table. Vanessa's mother Lauren had the same resemblance as her daughter while Vanessa's dad Brian also had blonde hair and blue eyes. Drinks were being served at the table and I so had to refrain myself from I wasn't old enough to drink but remembered that it didn't matter.
"So Calista how is your father doing." Brian asks while cutting up a piece of his small meatballs. I tense not expecting that question. My father was very absent from life even though it didn't always be like that. Our relationship was so strained that we are now two strangers living in the same house together. My heart starts to break a little as I think of the past and I how I wish for things to go back to the way they were.
"Um he's doing good I guess I don't really see him as often."
"Well it's completely understandable honey your dad's job is exhausting and really takes all of his time." Lauren says while taking a sip of her wine. Vanessa rolls her eyes and gives me the impression to ignore her.
"Oh I know which is why I accept that I probably won't see him around as much."
"Well don't be sad honey. I think this is the perfect opportunity for you to start working and getting a job." Lauren says.
Before I can open my mouth and say that my dad won't let me have a job. The doorbell rings having everyone look at the front door. "Vanessa honey go get the door." Lauren says urgently. The room starts to get a little tense as Vanessa gets up to go answer the door. The calm vibe that was in the room has turned tense. Vanessa's mom starts pouring more wine into the bottle and Brian pushes his plate away urgently not hungry anymore as his jaw clenches and his eyes darken.
"Excuse me I'll be right back I have to go the bathroom." I say as I get up from the table and make my way to the bathroom. I don't want to witness who is at the door, nor do I want to see an argument occur. I hate confrontations just like I hate freezing up when people or my dad in general argue with me and I have no words to say something back to defend myself. I take a deep breaths willing myself to calm down and not let my anxiety get in the way of my feelings.
I take one last breath and walk out the bathroom and on my way to the dining room. As I walk I hear unfamiliar voices but the sound of utensils clicking on plates and small laughter's can be heard from the hallway. I walk in and take a moment to look at everybody. My heart drops when I see the one person who I have been trying to escape from my mind and reality.
Vanessa notices that I'm here and smiles brightly "Calista I'd like for you to meet my uncle and his wife Julia." She gestures to the man and woman sitting across from her and my breathing starts to increase and my knuckles start to sweat.
What the fuck.
The man in front of me is the man who is not only my teacher but my friend's uncle. Alistair. My heart raced as I realized he was Vanessa's absent uncle. The pieces fell into place, as I connected the dots between Alistair's last name and Vanessa's last name and I felt a sense of dread mixed with an undeniable attraction. He was here with a woman beside him, looking every bit the distinguished professor I knew from class.
I looked to the woman bedside him.
Jealousy starts crawling up my throat but I push it aside. Julia, Alistair's wife, somehow carried an air of quiet elegance. She was tall and graceful, with a poise that commanded attention without demanding it. Her hair was a rich mixed with grey strays and chestnut brown, cascading in soft waves over her shoulders. Her eyes, a deep hazel, sparkled with intelligence and coldness, complementing her fair, flawless complexion.
At the dinner, she wore a sleek, navy blue dress that hugged her slender figure, paired with a delicate pearl necklace that added a touch of understated glamour.
I put on a fake smile "it's nice to meet you both." I wave at them not knowing if I even have the strength to shake their hands.
Dinner was a blur of emotions. I was hyper-aware of Alistair's presence, feeling the heat of his gaze from across the table. The conversation flowed around us, but I was caught in a silent storm of desire and guilt. He was my friend's uncle, my teacher, and a married man. Yet, the pull between us was undeniable.
As the evening wore on, I found myself stealing glances at Alistair, each look sending a thrill through me. Our eyes locked several times, and I could see the same turmoil reflected in his gaze. It was a dangerous game, and I knew I was treading on thin ice.
After dinner, Vanessa's family gathered in the drawing room, and I found myself seated next to Alistair. The proximity was intoxicating, and I could feel the warmth of his body even without touching. Our conversation was polite, but there was an undercurrent of tension that neither of us could ignore.
As the night drew to a close, I excused myself, feeling a mix of relief and regret. I could feel Alistair's eyes follow me as I left, and I knew that this was just the beginning of a complicated journey. The drive back home was a whirlwind of thoughts, the guilt of my attraction to a married man and my friend's uncle weighing heavily on me.
When I got home I laid in bed that night, restless and conflicted. The slow burn of desire was there, but so was the realization of the boundaries I couldn't cross.
The line between right and wrong was clear, yet my heart refused to listen. As I drifted off to sleep, I knew that the days ahead would be filled with challenges, and I could only hope that I'd find the strength to face them.
