ARCELIA'S LIFE, ONCE shattered by her father's fate, had found a semblance of okayness. She had wandered the world with Jack, seeking thrills and trouble. Later, she forged her own path, gathering a new family of thieves around her. But now, at sixteen, impatience gnawed at her. Today was supposed to be her Father's Day on land, abd she had waited, heart hopeful. Yet the day waned, and he did not appear.

She imagined him with Elizabeth and their young son, and she bore no anger. No, anger had no place in her heart. What she felt was a pang of hurt, a sharp reminder of her own existence. How dare he forget to acknowledge her? She was still his blood, his kin. How could he forget her?

Determined, she set off to find him before the sea could fully claim once more. If she was fast enough, she could catch him before he got too far. He was going to be forced to look at her, whether he liked it or not. He would have to see her, to recognize her presence. She pondered, could she be worthy of guarding his heart, yet unworthy of a visit? Deep down, she knew it wasn't actually like that. When you only had one single day, you had to choose the people who needed you most. Choices had to be made. People had to be prioritized. Part of her grasped this truth, but the larger, more insensitive part of her simmered with feeling abandoned, left in the shadows. She just felt left out, forgotten.
