Not long after Kesine left, she came back with a sad look. And as her eyes met mine, she shook her head negatively.I closed my eyes with a sigh. Afterall, it wasn't something new for us that His Majesty will decline us a audience. He's just too busy with his 'work'.
I sighed again as I opened my eyes and looked at my maid. She's shaking top to bottom as she cried silently.
Life in the palace was never an easy one.
I walked to my bed side table and took out an envelope and gave it to her.
She looked at me with her questioning teary eyes. I smiled as I explained, "Since you refused to work under someone else and rejected all my help, I can only do this for. This is a land at the countryside near your hometown. I remembered your family used to be a renowned family of chefs. It'll be great if you anfmd your son can restart your ancestors' work. That time you closed down your shops because of your father's gambling habits. Now he's no more and you've a son with his family. If I remembered correctly, his wife is also a fantastic cook. It's your time now to live your rightful life, Mrs. Kesine Heideson."
And as soon as I finished, Kesine hugged me tightly. She cried loudly this time as she kept on muttering and her words finally broke my facade and I cried too along with her.
"Oh my poor child, what did I do to deserve your this kindness. What did I ever do? Why the world is so cruel to this kind soul? Why? If only you were my real daughter and if only you were one of us, a common folk. If I had only taken you away when your mother died as your mother had wished in her last breathe. If only-"
"His Majesty is going to enter."
She had something more to say when a palace guard announced His Majesty's arrival. At first, I was too shocked as it's been almost a year since I last saw him but I quickly adjusted myself.
I broke the hug and composed myself. Wiped my tears as I inquired with my eyes to Kesine. And as she nodded, I sighed with a relief.
She gave a one last longing look at me, before she turned to leave.
When I heard her voice greeting His Majesty, I knew by then that he, the man I loved for 12 years of my 20 years of life, has came.
Every time, he's near my heart would palpitate faster because of love but now this time heart is palpitating because of nervousness.
Afterall this will be the first time in this year to see him and even my last time to be finally seeing him.
"After living in the palace for quite some time, I see, you have forgotten your manners, woman. Not even turning to greet your Emperor anymore, huh?! Do you think you're above me now and don't need to greet me, your Emperor anymore?!"
As I hear his words behind my back, I knew he's here. And as always his words are dripping with venom. But the difference is that before it used to hurt me and now it didn't.
And his words successively kicked away my nervousness.
I slowly turned and greeted him with a bow, "Pardon me for my mistake, Your Majesty. I was just too surprised to see you here as I wasn't expecting you to come."
I answered as gracefully and softly as I could as I know how much he hated to hear my voice.
And just like I knew, he sneered and said, "You were the one who asked me for an audience if I'm not wrong. Now that I see you, I can understand why?"
I frowned as I suddenly looked up. What does he mean by he understands why?
And my answer was given straight away as he swiftly took me by my arms and threw me on the bed and got on top of me.
I was scared silly aumt his sudden outburst. Is this what he understood by my invitation?
I smiled sadly as he pressed his lips on my neck while his hands started to undo my dress.
A lone tear slipped from my left eye as I hugged the man once before my soul completely leaves this body of mine
But he pushed my hands away from me and glared right inti my eyes, "I remembered telling you not to touch me back with your dirty hands, woman. Did you forget that too?"
"No, I didn't, Your Majesty. I did it because I wanted to hug you for the first and last time, Your Majesty. Please, just this one time, let me hug you," I can feel my eyes are getting filled with tears as I staired straight into the mesmering green eyes of my husband.
He looks so beautiful with his green eyes and dark hair. Just Otherworldly. I just hoped to see him smile once for me just like how he smiles near his mistresses.
I once had a glimpse of his smile with his favourite mistress, Gesy. It was so beautiful.
"What are you trying to say, woman? Are you coming up with new schemes to harm others?" He asked still glaring but his eyes rounding of into mine as if trying to find something.
I smiled softly as the tears slipped away from my eyes as I refused to blink since I want to see my husband as much as I want before I die.
"No, Your Majesty. No schemes anymore this time. I'm too tired to scheme now. I just want to bask in your embrace this night. Can I?"
"What are plotting, woman? I'm not liking this melodrama of yours anymore," He said as he pushed me away and climbed off the bed.
I hurriedly climbed off too though I felt a little dizzy and back hugged him to stop. He roughly hold my hand perhaps to break the hug. But befire he could say anything, I spoke.
"Please, just this time, Your Majesty. Just this time. This will be the last time I make a childish wish. Please stay. Let me hug you just this time. Please don't push me away, please."
I buried my face in his back as I felt him remove my hands softly instead of roughly. He slowly turned towards me as he pulled my chin up with his fingers and looked inti my eyes.
"What is wrong with you, woman?" He asked as I leaned in his fingers to further feel his warmth.
