There is no easy way for Juliet to compile the words to say goodbye to her mom. She is witnessing her mom slowly die of the horrible poison that is commonly known as cancer. The tumour is consuming her, eating away at her. Making her weaker by the minute. But Juliet refuses to think of her mom as another dying cancer patient. Her mom will always be remembered as youthful, radiant, humble and free spirited.
That is the way Juliet will always remember her. Now and forever on.
"Juliet it's time." Her father says quietly, pursing his lips as he gestured to the large steel door of room 10B, her mothers hospital room at Kingswood Hospital. Juliet simply nodded, quickly flattening her couture black pencil skirt before sitting up from the rock hard hospital chair in the dull, depressing waiting room. She took slow, careful steps towards the small room that withheld her mother. She could hear her fathers footsteps close behind as he followed her, patting her back soothingly. "Juliet, this isn't a goodbye. There is still a chance she could survive this treatment" Her father whispered softly.
"But the survival rate is slim" Juliet said slowly, her eyes meeting his "especially someone at her stage". Her father didn't respond. As a doctor he knew that the treatment could either prolong his wife's life or it could go wrong and kill her instantly.
Juliet knew her father was in denial.
Juliet now stood directly in front of the large door. She blinked away the tears as she gently turned the steel knob and pushed on the door. As soon as she walked into the room she saw her mother, sitting on a wooden rocking chair beside the window. Juliet stood in the doorway for a couple minutes, observing her mother. She was hardly even recognisable, her healthy long beach blonde hair was now completely gone, instead her head was completely bald, her scalp dry and bare. Her bright, crystal blue eyes was now a dull grey, drooping bags hanging underneath them. Even her beautiful sunkissed skin now a sickly pale colour.
"Mom" Juliet said softly, almost a whisper.
"My darling" her mother said, her voice came out scratchy, nothing like her usual joyous, bubbly voice. "I didnt think you were going to come this time. Considering you've got exclusive back stage tickets to fashion week".
"I wasn't going to miss this. Especially since I'm the only one who thinks this treatment is basically committing suicide" Juliet said.
"Juliet" she said in a warning tone. "Was the only reason you came to visit me to criticise my choices?".
"Mom I'm sorry" Juliet said quietly "I just don't want our family to change. Can you imagine how dad and I would cope without you?". Her mother placed her hand onto Juliet's hand. "This trement will either save me or break me and I have to be ready for the outcome"
The steel door begins to open, creaking loudly as Juliet's father and another doctor walk in. Juliet's father signalled to Juliet that its time to leave so the doctors can start her positionally lethal treatment, "Juliet its time for you to leave" the doctor said, his voice deep and masculine.
Juliet latched herself to her mother, tears slowly dripping down her cheeks. Her mother began brushing her hair with her fingers, soothing Juliet.
"It will be okay"
