"Why'd you go off with Walker?" Jack asked, when he was driving me home from school Monday afternoon.
I stopped, and tried to conjure up the best lie possible.
"He was helping me with something for Shawn."
Jack, being the idiot that he was, took the bait. Since Friday night, I'd seen Walker every second of every hour of every day. I had told him everything about Peter, and that I couldn't hurt Jack yet. I just needed time, which he understood. I wasn't sure how long he'd be so okay with the idea, though. Jack pulled into the Davidson's driveway, where Walker stood, eyeing me from the garage where he was washing his car. I hopped out, and maintained eye contact until I had disappeared into the house. Shawn met me inside with a hug, and we went upstairs to the balcony that looked over the pool.
"I need party ideas for this weekend please." Shawn said, shifting the cigarette around in his mouth.
"How long is Walker here for?" I asked, changing the subject.
Everyone seemed caught off guard by my question.
"Walker's only nineteen. He's helping mom and dad with some business matters that require him to be home. It's kind of fucked, honestly. They put all this pressure on him to take over the business after us."
I spent the next four minutes fantasizing Walker as some powerful businessman. I sighed, and sat back into the chair.
"Why do you ask, Ava?"
"Just wondering." I replied.
That was when it hit me. Walker would have to go back to his apartment in the city before too long. Then, I'd just be the girl he hooked up with in his hometown. He could go back to the bars and girls that were mature and his age. I watched Walker walk past us and into his bedroom down the hall."I'm going to the bathroom." I said quickly and sped off.
I winded down the hall, until I was met with the face that made my problems fade away. He looked at me from his bed with that beautiful smile of his, and picked me up, kissing me quickly. We lied down together, and began to talk. I tried to hide my concerns about him moving away, but it was hard. I got distracted from the ding to my phone.
I saw you in the woods with Walker. You're a whore, and you're mine. You're going to regret this, bitch.
Walker noticed the look of fear on my face, and snatched the phone from my hands. He looked at it, and blankly stared at the screen. His face was soon red with anger. I sat up on the bed, a feeling of sickness washing over me. I wanted to go home. I felt so alone. I had no family, and I couldn't even tell them what was happening to me. Walker took my face in his hands, and kissed me. I felt my troubles melt away. My body traveled on top of his, before I was on his lap, and his mouth began to move to my cheek
My heart dropped. The door swung open.
"What. The. Hell."
Jack stood in the doorway. I spun around, my top had become untied from Walker, and I quickly tied it back and dove off the bed to Jack's side.
"Jack, wait!" I called out.
Jack didn't look back at me. He stormed out of the house and slammed the car door behind him, before speeding away.
_______
I walked up the steps to Shawn's house, peeling my jean shorts from my sticky legs. It had been two weeks since Jack had caught Walker and I. I couldn't step foot in Shawn's house before becoming flooded with a nauseating amount of guilt. So, Walker came to my place most nights. Today was my first day coming back to the house, and I wondered if Shawn had found out about me and his brother. I assumed he had considering he and Jack had just hung out, but I wanted to believe he thought better of me. My jeep rolled up on the curb, and I was struck with shock from what I saw. Packs of cop cars flooded the Davidson's street. I felt a single tear tribble down my cheek, and the salty liquid dripped into my lips. I nervously began to play with my hands, wondering what was going on. I knew it was bad when I saw Mr. and Mrs. Davidson for the first time in forever. Mrs. Davidson was coated in makeup mixed tears, and her husband held her shoulders while she could barely stand. In that moment I watched a stretcher covered up with a sheet leaving the house. I felt my body fall to the ground. Walker?
"Shawn!" Mrs. Davidson screamed.
Her scream was so blood curdling, it almost woke the whole neighborhood that early morning. I ran up the driveway, where my body was stopped by a large force. I looked up to see Walker, who couldn't even look down at me. He wasn't crying. He wasn't frowning. He was just.. still.
"Walker, I-" he cut me off.
"You should go home, Ava."
I nodded, shocked by the coldness of his tone. As I drove home, to my empty house, I realized how alone I was. I realized that now, I had no one. And then I got a ring to my phone.
