WILLOW"S POV :

As an NHL player's little sister, you always grew up around hockey. I even grew up playing hockey. I was always on co-ed teams, so I would be playing with boys and girls. I played with boys and girls all the way up until my freshman year of high school. I always played as a goalie. It was just the position for me. It always has been and always will be.

I tried out for the girl's team, but I didn't get on.

Instead, I got onto the boys team. From then on, I had gotten very used to playing with boys. I was on the boys Junior Varsity team in my freshman year. One day, one of their goalies had gotten hurt during an outside-of-school workout. They had two Varsity goalies and three JV goalies. The three JV goalies being me, this guy Matt, and then this guy Victor. Yet, when it came to bringing a goalie up to fill in their injured goalie's spot, I was chosen.

Me, a freshman, and a female, was now playing the backup goalie for my highschool's boy's varsity team. Playing on the boy's JV team was already a huge compliment, but being pulled up to varsity felt amazing. The one bit that sucked was all of the upperclassmen doubting me because of my age and gender. I got to prove them wrong.

By my sophomore year, both of the goalies on the varsity team had graduated. I was offered a spot at tryouts for the boys team, and I accepted it happily. If I could play on the boy's team as a freshman, why not give it a shot and try out for the boy's team again as a sophomore?

I made the boy's varsity team as starting goalie. I had gotten insanely lucky. My luck had just gotten better throughout highschool. I had always played on the boys teams which meant I had a lot of challenges, but I was up for it. And it made me better. It made me play really well.

Which somehow led to me being drafted into the NHL. I was a first round pick by the Saint Louis Blue. I was chosen round one, pick twenty-six. I don't know how I was chosen so early on.

That also led to a full-ride sports scholarship to my dream college. Boston College.

Boston College was just how I dreamed it. I loved it so much. I was so grateful to have been able to be accepted there. And when hockey tryouts came, as a BC freshman, I was placed on the boy's JV team once again. It was nothing I wasn't used to at this point. Playing with boys had been something I had been doing my whole life since I started off on co-ed teams.

Eventually, the next year when it was my sophomore year, I had made it onto varsity as the backup goalie. I was really excited. Even though I was the backup goalie, that was better than nothing. I had always been extremely grateful for the opportunity to be playing with guys who are twice my size and strength.
