The five story building loomed over above, framed by the dark grey sky gently crying, darkening the concrete path to the front door. The off-yellow lights illuminating some of the windows to show despite its looks, the building wasn't deserted. Green framed each window against the brown brick of the building that may have at one point been red when it was first built, but was long since sun bleached of color. The dirtied outer walls of the first floor resembled the color of old parchment. Grass surrounded the building and walkway with a sparse layout of trees.
At least, that's what anyone else would see.
What I saw was very different. The grass is dark and sticky looking while hidden things shifted in the shadows of the trees. A black substance smeared the walkway all the way to the front door. It dripped from every windowsill and leaked down from the rooftop.
'Oh my~ How exciting~'
I didn't finch at the shrill gravelly voice in my ear. It was one only I could hear unless it wanted others to hear. What do I mean by it? Well, it's a long story, but in short it was the demon I sold my soul to. My only companion, if you could call it that. The form it would take was a small black teddy bear, and it was currently resting on my right shoulder."I can see why you wanted to come here."
I went where it wanted to go, for the sake of helping it to gain more power. It could devour other demons and negative spirits. This building was bursting with that energy. It was so strong that it could just feed straight from the energy itself for a while.
'Don't just stand there! C'monnnn, get closerrrr!!! I can just barely taste that deliciously nauseating darkness from here!'
I grab my bag and suitcase, glancing at the five boxes I would need to carry up before making my way across the black substance smearing the walkway. I could hear the sickeningly sticky suction with every step I took, but every time the substance latched onto me, Nex would eat it up. Did I forget to mention my demon has a name?
Nex, the demon of slaughter. It was a powerful high ranking demon, but because it answered my summoning and I was extremely weak, we made a pact that I would travel where it wanted and help it to feed on others of its kind to eliminate it's competition. The more it feeds, the stronger it gets, and the stronger I become due to our pact.
I realized I had reached the front door and looked at the handle, the black substance was jammed in it and leaking out the keyhole. Taking a wild guess, I assumed most of the door knobs would be like that in this building. Reaching out and firmly grasping it, I could hear Nex feeding as I opened the door and walked into the building, dragging my suitcase in behind me.
My eyes scanned my surroundings, the upper part of the walls was covered in a brown and yellow stripped wallpaper of various shades and width while the lower parts were just plain wood paneling. The doors inside seemed to be green as well which stood out against the dull walls. To my left was a bulletin board next to the mailboxes with a table underneath it.
Again, that's what any normal person would see at least. The walls were leaking the black substance and it hung in corners like spider webs. Every door was lined in the sludge like stringy substance. It was beginning to disgust me so I closed my eyes and focused. When I opened them again the apartment building looked normal.
'Oh you party pooper, can't even appreciate the beautifully repulsiveness of this place.'
Ignoring Nex's comment, I focused on the table. On said table was a little note. I picked it up and lazily read the words.
'Dear newest tenant Y/n, please knock on my door when you arrive so I may give you your keys. Door 103.'
Right. Yay. Human interaction. Soooo fun. I stuff the note in my pocket and trudge over to 103, knocking politely. There was a sound and I looked down to see the mail slot open and two dull, dead, eyes staring at me. Taking a few steps back, I politely nod to the eyes.
