My room & my sister's are separated by a wall. When I was little, it kind of soothed me to know that no matter what, she'd always be on the other side at night. I'd knock on the wall & she'd knock back. It was as natural as saying good night.
So of course I was sad that she was moving away to college.
" I'll miss our knocking the wall before going to bed" I said.
She looked puzzled.
"What do you mean by knocking? I don't remember that". I was confused as to why she would deny our nightly ritual, I thought maybe she didn't want to seem weird in front of her friends.
I had an urge to knock on the wall that night, even though I knew there will be no response.
Eventually I went to sleep.
Only to be woken up a couple of minutes later by two knocks.
