Dave and James weren't together anymore after James kicked dave out, they're relationship hasn't been the same, after dave was drunk and lashed out at James, it was never the same

*flashback from James's POV*

Dave was sitting on the couch, and I was trying to reason with him, his alcohol addiction was destroying our love, I loved dave so much, but at times, I felt like he loved his beer more than he'll ever love me. James's pleading voice arose as he tried to plead with dave "dave please, I love you, can you just be sober for one day? Well it doesn't even matter anymore, it's night! You've been drinking all day, I'd enjoy it if we got to spend some time together" James said, his eyes filled with tears, his voice choked with emotion, James looks at dave as dave slowly turns his head around, dave angry at James, dave yells at James, "James shut your damn mouth, all you do is complain, let me enjoy a few beers!" James flinched at how loud he was being, James replied as he said back "dave, it's not just a few! It's the whole case, you've had two of the six pack beers!" dave was angry at that, he jumped up from the couch, his movements sluggish from being so drunk, he got directly in James's face, dave got close as he said, his voice a low growl "James, I don't know who you think you are, but you're nothing! You're just a pathetic person to me, I don't even love you! You're so naive, no one will ever love you, never!" and with that, dave punched James directly in the face, James fell crying, he has a black eye, James slumped against the floor, dave kicks James's body and leaves

End of flashback

James wakes up, he stares at the picture on his bedside table, it's him and dave, he turns the picture around so he doesn't see it,
James still loves and misses dave so much, but he can't forgive him, he never will, he loved dave so much. After the whole incident dave was also kicked out of Metallica.
James was looking for a new guitarist, he eventually found one.
