Watching Fern and Laurent chatting away happily made me wrinkle my nose.
I glanced at Icarus munching on his bacon and eggs and complained, "I'm so tired today."
He arched an eyebrow and replied between bites, "I'm a wolf, not a witch. I can't magically erase your tiredness," with a grin as he fed me a salty piece of bacon.
"Yeah, I barely slept last night," I pondered aloud.
"Must have been a pea under my mattress," I joked, earning a disbelieving headshake from him.
"I caught you snoozing on the ground. You're not much of a diva when it comes to comfy pillows," Icarus mentioned, causing me to realize.
"Oh, that was you? You're a scout! I totally forgot that night," I exclaimed, which made him chuckle.
"'Yeah, me and my sister Azra found you that night," he explained, finishing his food and sneaking bites from my plate.
Before I knew it, a annoyed Adonis joined us at the table.
"Who stuck the peas under your mattress?' I teased, prompting Icarus to feed me more bacon.
Adonis glanced over. "I actually had a whole can," he said dryly as he began eating.
I chuckled after swallowing my food. "I didn't sleep well last night either," I mentioned, earning a curious look from him.
"Hmm, we might need to investigate," he said, setting down his fork.
"Someone from your pack, Abby, is coming over for a business chat, so I need you to stay in your room this afternoon," he informed me, making me anxious.
"It's going to be the beta. Let's keep it a secret a bit longer," he said casually, getting back to his food.
"Sure, I can handle that. Plus, I'm getting into TV lately," I replied, putting aside my worries for now, making Icarus chuckle.
"And hey, make sure she doesn't get out," he said, pointing to Icarus, who groaned in response. I just gave him a side-eye glance.
"I hope you like watching reality TV," I said, causing Icarus to roll his eyes.
After breakfast, it was only nine o'clock, so I still have a bit of time before I need to go to my room.
I sat on the couch in the living room with other pack members.
After a while, I began to itch my hand, feeling a stinging sensation on my skin.
In annoyance, I looked down at the skin and saw a deep red cut forming on my skin.
In a rush of adrenaline, I bolted from the room, my heart racing as I burst into the bustling dining hall in a state of panic.
Frantically scanning the crowded room, I searched for any sign of Adonis amidst the sea of faces, but he was nowhere to be seen.
Determined not to give up, I retraced my steps, the faint scent of his cologne guiding me as I hurried up the grand staircase, each step echoing in the empty hallway.
Following the elusive trail, I reached a heavy wooden door, my hand trembling as I pushed it open to reveal a dimly lit room.
And there, bathed in the soft glow of the overhead lights, was Adonis, seated at a regal red oak table, a stark contrast to the somber surroundings.
His silhouette illuminated by the dusky light, he turned his gaze towards me, his expression unreadable as he sat still in a sleek black swivel chair.
"What is the matter?" Adonis said, setting down his papers that he had in front of him.
I walked across the room and stood in front of him. "I'm not sure how to explain it," I said, looking down at my hand as blood dripped down my fingers.
Adonis followed my eyes, getting up from his chair and coming around to take my hand into his.
"I didn't do it. I was minding my own business on the couch, and it just came out of nowhere," I promised.
Adonis reached over his desk, opened a drawer, and pulled out a medical kit to attend to the wound.
"I know you didn't do it," he said softly. I turned my head, confused.
Curious about the situation, I whispered, "What do you mean?" as I observed him delicately wrapping my hand in gauze.
Adonis let out a sigh, "Your mate is nearby; it's not supposed to be happening."
After finishing treating my hand, he sat down in his chair with a hint of annoyance.
Seated in front of his desk, I was intrigued by this new piece of information.
"He's close? How do you have information about him?" I inquired with genuine interest.
Adonis' amber eyes met mine as he leaned back, stating, "I knew who he was the moment I saw you."
"Wait a minute, you didn't even tell me who he was this whole time?" I said with a glare in my eyes.
Adonis just answered, "It's for your own safety," without looking at me, focusing on his computer instead.
I kept staring at him and retorted loudly, "You can't decide that for me, Adonis," as I stood up, pushing the chair back.
Adonis glared back at me, but I didn't care about how he felt at that moment.
"It is, Abby. You wouldn't get it," he said.
"Then explain it to me!" I shouted.
Adonis raised an eyebrow and provoked me, "What will you do when you confront the man who mistreated you? The man who imprisoned and harmed you?" He never took his eyes off me.
"That man is him, Abby," he revealed.
Left with no words to say, my brain felt fuzzy at his words as they repeated what he said, but I remained optimistic.
The air was thick as Adonis and I exchanged glances, and then there was a knock on the door.
A short woman bowed her head at both of us before she spoke, "Alpha, the beta from Ashenhowl will be here early with his alpha," she said.
The hairs on the back of my neck rose, causing my eyes to widen a bit.
"That will be okay, send them up in a few minutes," he said instructing, as she bowed and left, shutting the door behind her.
Adonis' eyes remained fixed on me. "You can stay if you'd like," he said, moving a chair next to him.
"If you really want to know, then join," he finished.
I got up and took the seat next to him, feeling confident to confront this man who is my so-called mate.
