01) Type: K-Drama
02) My personal note (Reason I chose this): So true beauty was my first ever Kdrama that I watched a year ago, and the reason I chose this was that many of my friends recommended it, and so I got really curious. I also hate body shaming, racism and stereotypical mindsets, so I decided that maybe this was a good drama to start with.
03) Leads:
Female lead- Moon Ga-Young as Lim Joo-kyung
Male lead- Cha Eun-Woo as Lee Soo-Ho
2nd female lead- Park Yoo-Na as Kang Soo-Jin
2nd male lead- Hwang In-Yeop as Han Seo-Jun
04) Themes: Friendship, suicide, family drama, teenage love, body shaming
05) No. of Episodes: 16
06) Age rating (my opinion): 12-13 year olds and above
07) Character Studies:
i) Lim Joo-Kyung:
She's a girl with a rough past, and has a lot of trauma related to bullies. She's insecure of her looks, and uses make-up as a shield to her scars. She's a kind, loving and understanding person. She's ambiverted, and a bit dramatic at the same time. She loves her father. All she wants is to live a better high-school life. She's also very keen about reading horror comics, which is something she shares with Soo-Ho.
ii) Lee Soo-Ho:
He's that iconic CEO's son, who seems cold-hearted at the front, but is actually a very warm person once you get to know him. He doesn't open up to people easily, but he feels for Joo-Kyung. He's been suffering from the guilt of an accident that happened a few years ago, which also broke his friendship with his best friend. He's very popular, but doesn't actually have friends. He used to be passionate about music, especially keyboard.
iii) Kang Soo-Jin:
She's the friendly type at first. She's welcoming and a close friend for Joo-Kyung. As the plot develops, we get to know that she's under a lot of study-pressure, and is also abused by her father sometimes. She's also best friends with Soo-Ho, as well as his study-partner. She makes a lot of wrong decisions after getting jealous of Joo-Kyung and Soo-Ho.
iv) Han Seo-Jun:
He's the bad-boy of the class. He own a motorbike, and has a mother who is sick. He is close with his little sister, too. He's a soft person, but likes to be tough on the outside, as that is what bad boys do. He blames Soo-Ho for the incident, and that continues their rivalry. He grows to love Joo-Kyung, but knows that she is meant for Soo-Ho. He loves music, and also sings beautifully.
08) Plot: This drama got me hooked from the beginning, and it continued to build up. At the start, I found myself falling for Han Seo-Jun but realised that I was slowly drifting towards Lee Soo-Ho instead. As for Joo-Kyoung, I felt like Moon Ga-young played her part tremendously well, and the make-up transition was incredible! I liked Kang Soo-Jin, but in the later episodes I ended up hating her. I was amazed about how much I had missed out on, as I started watching dramas really late compared to other people. I love how the different emotions were portrayed, and the suspense during the middle was intriguing. I especially appreciate the way Soo-Ho opens up to Joo-gyung, and their breakup saddened me. At the end, I felt terrible for Seo-Jun, who I felt like deserved more than what he got.
(no more spoilers!)
