Chapter II
All Aboard
Around an hour later, a small fat lady in a withering apron came around with a bowl of water. "One sip only." She said selfishly. Grateful for any water the passengers took a sip.
The sun set and an easterly wind picked up. The passengers got in their potato sacks and lay down.
The sun rose on the ocean and the passengers sat up. "You stole it you idiot. You're a thief and a liar. You stole it! Give it back!"
"I didn't take anything sir. I swear."
"Then where is my wallet. You are the only one near me. You must have taken it."
"I swear, I didn't touch your stuff." The older man stepped back. His face was pale. suddenly a arm swooped in and pounded him on the face. Eva ran over to the fallen man. She glared furiously at the other man for a while and returned to the other. He called over her parents who were all ready one step ahead of her. Gently picking up the now unconscious man and laying him down on a pile of potato sacks. He opened his eyelids and suddenly cried out. "I didn't touch his stuff. You believe me don't you." He said.
" I believe you." Eva reassured him in a whisper.
The older man - called Mr. Lancaster - spent the rest of the day with the O'Briens. Eva and him became very close.
The smell on the ship awful. Hundreds of passengers had sailed before them and no one bothered to clean it up. The ship food tasted like worms but anything was better than nothing.
