"Will you go to prom with me?

Sparklers sparkled and noisemakers made noise. One of Jake's buddies started playing 'My Heart Will Go On' on his electric guitar, the high-pitched squealing echoing down the halls while his friends hastily unrolled a massive, unimpressive poster. The neon pink Bristol board with Jake's words pasted on it shed glitter everywhere as they held it up, including onto the black dress pants of Jake, who was on his knee with a box in his hands.

Oh... no.

No. I wasn't the one being asked to prom. No, not me, in case you're wondering.

I was only there because the cake that sat proudly on a desk not too far away from the soon to be prom couple was made by me. Yeah, I couldn't care less for the couple, all I wanted was to see what people thought about my cake. You know, maybe an "oh my gosh! May made this? It's gorgeous!" or a "Mayleena Khanavan? I never imagined a quiet girl like her would have such talent! Wow!"

Well... I got neither.

No praise for a spectacular cake that Jake paid only thirty bucks for. Normally I would have charged eighty for such a detailed, two-tiered cake with flowers and edible pearls all over it... but Jake was broke, and I was too nice for my own good.

As the girl I didn't even know squealed and accepted his prom-posal, I turned on my heels and walked away with a heavy sigh, seeing as my cake was getting absolutely no attention at all. What a waste of a sleepless night and so much effort.

When I joined my best friend Aurora in front of our lockers, she greeted me with her usual radiant grin. "Didn't want to see the prom-posal?" I asked playfully.

My beautiful, red-haired friend rolled her eyes. "I avoid those like the plague."

To that, I laughed. This was why we were the best of friends.

"But what about your cake?" she went on to ask, sweeping her luscious locks over her shoulder before she continued to haphazardly toss her books into her backpack. "Did everyone marvel at your masterpiece?"

My lips fell into a pout as I opened my own locker to pack up my things as well. "Nope. And I worked so hard too. I could have just made it out of Styrofoam."

She snorted before winking. "Well, if you want, I'll force Jake to pay that extra money he owes you." Her mischievous expression made me snort because despite Aurora's stunning appearance with reddish-orange hair, vibrant green eyes, perfect freckles, and a smile that could break hearts, there was no denying that she was scary. And I was ever so lucky to have her as a best friend because I knew damn well that she was serious when she made threats like that. "Please do," I said, though following it up with a silly smile to assure her that I was only kidding.

"I'm on it," she snickered evilly, making me chuckle. "But more important than stupid Jake... tomorrow. Any plans for tomorrow?"

I hesitated.
