"Why were you on the hill that night?"
Karma asked for the third time. He kept repeating the same question, and I kept giving the same stubborn response. I sighed, feeling tired, hungry, and now frustrated. "Look, I already told you-I got lost while performing one of my friends' dares."
"Yeah? Well, I also know you're lying. Over and over again!" Karma's annoyance was clear in his voice.
Oh my god, he didn't just call me a liar again! What's with his constant accusations? Yes, I'm lying right now, but for a good reason! Last night, though-I wasn't. What's his deal?!
I took a deep breath, my hands tightening into fists at my sides. "First of all, you have no right to call me a liar when you have nothing to base that on. Second," I raised two fingers, keeping my voice steady, "I don't owe you any explanations, so drop it! And third, I'm not hungry anymore, and I have no interest in arguing with anyone, so excuse me."
I huffed in anger, but the satisfaction of snapping back at him was fleeting. Almost immediately, embarrassment washed over me like a cold shower.
What did I just do? Please tell me I didn't just blow up on him like that. I just busted a fuse on karma akavane. Holy cow
Why does it always turn out like this whenever I'm-ugh, I hate being flustered. It always makes me act so... not like me!
Before I could overthink any further, Karma held up his index finger in front of my face. The sudden closeness made my heart jump, and I blinked, trying to focus on his words rather than the warmth radiating from his hand. Hu
Don't blush. Don't even think about blushing.
"Not to call out your lie," Karma began, his voice low but pointed, "but you said yourself that you're new here. So, how do you already have friends?" He leaned in slightly, his eyes gleaming with a mixture of amusement and suspicion as he held up two fingers, mimicking my earlier gesture. "You also said you were lost, but somehow ended up in the middle of the forest with no scrapes or scratches-no phone or flashlight. Makes me wonder."
His words were calm, almost casual, but the intensity behind his gaze made my stomach twist. I opened my mouth, searching for a quick response, but nothing came. Instead, I just stared at him, feeling my face grow warmer by the second. I couldn't even look him in the eyes, so I averted my gaze, staring at the ground as I fumbled for an excuse
"I, uh..." Scrambling for any response, I started to fidget. "Well, I-"
"And I guess that means I don't have to give up my strawberry shake after all," Karma said, cutting me off.
All thoughts of replying to him flew out of my head as soon as those words hit me-or rather, hit my stomach. I don't think I've ever snapped my head up faster. "What do you mean? You promised!"
Oh crap, that came out more desperate than I intended.
Karma smirked, tilting his head as if he was savouring his victory. "Yes, and the condition was that you answer my questions," he said, his voice calm but firm.
Suddenly, I felt the annoyance creeping back in. I narrowed my eyes. "And I did answer you. Unless you went deaf when I did."
Whoa. Where did that come from?
I think that jab really annoyed him. His expression shifted ever so slightly-his eyes narrowed just a fraction, and his lips curved into something less playful. "I'd watch my mouth if I were you," he said, dangling the unopened milk carton from his hand like a prize.
