Heeseung was not a light sleeper. From the time that he was three years old and Jay moved into his room, he had been in Do-Young and Ha-Rin's room until the twins were born and once Sunoo was born, the twins moved into their own room and Jay moved into Heeseung's room, he had trained himself to wake up at the smallest noise. Now three years later, he had mastered the art perfectly.
So when the door to his and Jay's room opened, he was awake instantly and sitting up in bed.
"What is it, Sunnie?" Heeseung waved his little brother over, making room for him in the bed.
"There's a monster in my room" Sunoo whispered.
"Is there?" Heeseung played along, trying to not sound nervous. He was still at that age where he also believed in monsters under the bed.
"Uh-uh, and he's scary" Sunoo nodded. Heeseung lifted his covers, allowing Sunoo to climb into bed next to him.
"Do you want to show me?" Heeseung wondered, willing to risk his own life for his baby brother's sake.
"Yeah" Sunoo got up, taking Heeseung's hand and leading him to the room across the hall. Jay never once stirred and Heeseung was glad for that. As soon as he opened the door, with Sunoo hiding behind his legs, Heeseung was caught off guard and screamed
"Boo!" Jake jumped out from behind the door.
"Heeseung-hyung?!" Sunghoon has obviously not expected Heeseung to be there. Sunoo burst into loud sobs, waking the entire house.
"Wait no, no! Please don't cry" Sunghoon panicked, trying to quiet Sunoo before their parents woke up.
"What is going on here?!" Ha-Rin came walking down.
"I think Jake and Sunghoon were playing a prank on Sunoo and he thought there was a monster under his bed. He came to me and I offered to check and make sure there were no monsters but...." Heeseung stopped, unwilling to admit that he got so scared that he screamed.
"We didn't expect him to be here! Just Sunoo" Jake explained.
"And you think that makes it okay, young man? That you deliberately tried to scare your little brother?" Ha-Rin scolded, putting her hands on her hips. Do-Young appeared a moment later, holding Niki and Jungwon. Jay was right behind him, still half asleep and rubbing his eyes.
"What's going on?" He questioned.
"Hoon and Jake were trying to scare Sunoo but ended up scaring Heeseung instead" Ha-Rin explained, casting a disappointed glance to the twins, who were now hanging their heads in shame and avoiding eye contact with their parents.
"Let's talk about this tomorrow, yeah?" Do-Young suggested, knowing that everyone was tired.
"Deal with it. Now" Ha-Rin demanded, taking the youngest two from her boyfriend and took them back to bed. Do-Young didn't really want to 'deal with it now' but he had no choice. Ha-Rin had gotten more bossy since Niki was born.
"Heeseung, take Sunoo and Jay back to your room. Do you mind Sunoo sleeping with you tonight?" Do-Young questioned, feeling bad for putting that on the kid.
"No, I don't mind. Come on Sunnie" Heeseung took his brothers by the hand, leading them back to his and Jay's room.
"We're sorry" Jake spoke up first.
"Yeah, we won't do it again" Sunghoon added, nodding along. Do-Young knew that but there was still the fact that they deliberately tried to scare Sunoo in the first place.
"I know you boys want to have fun with your brothers and you probably didn't think that it would even affect Sunoo but he is too young for you to be playing pranks like that on him. He gets really scared by it, okay?" Do-Young sat down, taking the twins into his arms and holding them on his lap.
"Okay" Sunghoon and Jake promised themselves that they would be more careful.
"And you two aren't even supposed to be awake in the first place. How do you want to explain that?" Do-Young pointed out.
"An overactive imagination?" Jake tried, not sure if that would work. Do-Young appreciated the determination to come up with something.
"Well, try to put that overactive imagination to sleep. It'll only get you in trouble. So, what do you think you are in trouble for?" Do-Young wanted to be sure that the boys understood why they were in trouble.
"For purposely scaring Sunoo and for being up when we shouldn't be" Sunghoon answered, feeling proud of himself for remembering. Do-Young nodded, giving little praise to Sunghoon for remembering before standing up and lifting the younger twin onto his bed above Jake's bed. Sunoo had wanted to sleep in a bunkbed and he did for a short while, on the top one, until he fell out of bed and then he was switched to having the single bed while the twins got the bunkbed. Jake and Sunghoon being so close to each other was probably what made it easy for them to plan a prank on their little brother.
"No more pranking your brother to scare him or these will seem like love pats" Do-Young warned, swatting Sunghoon twice before going to get Jake, who was already burying himself under his covers. Do-Young gave him the same two swats before standing up all the way and going to leave the room. Sunoo was waiting outside the door with a nervous Heeseung watching from around the corner.
"It's okay, bambi. Do you want me to tuck you in?" Do-Young lifted Sunoo into his arms.
"Ha, no! I'm too old for that" Heeseung scoffed, his eyes betraying him.
"Okay then. Come give me a hug and then off to bed. It's too late for little boys to be up" Do-Young held his free arm open to Heeseung, hugging the kid when Heeseung ran to him. Before the oldest boy could argue, Do-Young had lifted him with his free arm and carried him to the oldest two's room. Sunoo started sucking on his thumb, a habit that was broken the year before but under the circumstances, it was understandable, while Do-Young tucked the eight-year-old in. Before Do-Young even closed the door, Heeseung and Jay were both asleep.
"Are you going to be okay sleeping by yourself?" Do-Young wondered, looking at Sunoo, who was resting his head on his dad's shoulder.
"Are hyungs going to be mean again?" Sunoo wondered.
"I don't think they will but if you get scared, just come get your eomma or I and we'll take care of it" Do-Young promised, slipping into the middle kids' room and setting Sunoo down on his bed. Sunoo closed his eyes for a moment, drifting off already but trying to fight it. Do-Young sat beside him until Sunoo was no longer fighting sleep. He checked on the twins but they were already asleep and then peeked into the 'nursery' to find that Jungwon and Niki were curled up together in Jungwon's bed. Ha-Rin was already asleep when Do-Young returned to bed and let himself relax. When they woke up, there were eight other little bodies in the bed with Do-Young and Ha-Rin.
