I always hated October. It always reminded me of barbie. I hate barbie. I put on my pink heels and pink skirt with a bright blue crop top and a blue-pink windbreaker. I was always compared to barbie. The way my hair always sat perfectly, or my makeup was too good for a highschooler. I hate the color pink. I walk to my car and get in driving to school. The stereo talks about a series of murders and I switch the station over and over again. I can't stop my mind from wandering all over the place as I drive. I contemplate everything. I wonder if Mr. Hack will give us a quiz, though that's the least of my concerns. Teddy is probably gonna try asking me out again, or Tia will cry about some stupid guy. Eventually I paste on my smile and go inside the school. As I walk through the school waving around at everyone my eyes stay glued to the girl in black. Two days from now is her birthday. We used to be friends but her parents moved her away and she's back for the first time in five years. I wave at her and she gives me a dirty look. I don't know why she hates me. I miss her so much. I sent her letters all the time. I even tried calling her.
The day is excruciatingly long. I talk to everyone and Teddy, a hot blonde jock runs over to me smelling like sweat. "Hey Essie." He smiles. I fake a smile holding my breath "Hey Teddy what's up?" I ask. He gets on one knee and his friends open a poster, "Will you go to the Halloween dance with me." I roll my eyes and pull him up. "Teddy no!" I'm angry that he asked. "You know better than to ask me stupid questions." Teddy and I are close, He's one of the only two people that know I like girls. "Go away Teddy." I walk away and over to my locker where my best friend greets me. "Hey Tia." I say looking at her. She sighs "He still thinks he can turn you straight?" She asks. I nod and collect my books. "Emi is still ignoring me." I say with a little groan. Tia laughs a bit and when I turn Emily is on the floor picking up her binders. "Tia! stop laughing!" I smack her in the head and run to Emily helping her. She shoves me away and I sigh. "She's so pretty without that makeup. I don't know why she bothers wearing it." I say frustrated. I don't know why she suddenly hates me I didn't do anything. I try to focus the rest of the day but my mind is filled with the negative thoughts that have been bothering me. I swallow the negativity trying to avoid my thoughts. I carry on my day going to lunch in the cafeteria.
As I focus on my work silently finishing up the last of my assignment, Tia runs over with her friend Jayden chatting with him. Slowly, the cafeteria fills with people and Teddy, Shane, Alex and Brianna all come sitting next to me. I guess you could say we're the more popular students. Each of us have our own reason for such. Tia raps, Shane and Teddy are jocks, and Alex is top of all her classes and literally a rich model. I'm a rich kid since my parents work with the government. U.S. Diplomat things. It doesn't help that I have a bright blue convertible. I'm your local IT girl. However Jayden is a new kid. I don't even know him or why he's sitting at our table but I'm glad others are comfortable enough to sit with us. We're not mean, that's just society's favourite stereotype. I continue working silently and attempt to focus, but my brain always wanders back to the girl in black.
That night around 9pm, my thoughts had officially taken over and I could no longer tolerate the ignorance. I quickly put on my shoes and walked out the front door. It's not like my parents could catch me seeing as they're in Argentina. I climbed the tree across the street and sat on the branch opening Emily's window like I did when we were kids. She had her headphones in so I threw the eraser on her desk at her, the closest thing to me. "Emily!" I whisper. She sat up taking off her headphones. She wasn't wearing any makeup and her hair was wet. "Essie!" She whisper shouted. "Go away." I sighed and came in the room. "Is this about the kiss five years ago?" I ask stepping closer. She shakes her head abruptly, "It's about the fact that I called you everyday at 10pm like you asked me to, and you never answered one." I look at my feet and sigh "Emily my mom doesn't want us to be friends." I say softly. "I don't know why." She scoffed. "I could think of a few reasons." I sat on her bed and smiled softly looking up at her. "I'm sorry Emi." She rolled her eyes and hugged me tightly. "I missed you so much." We laugh at the same time and she motions to the closet.
Emily's closet had a trap door that led to a secret room. Her dad had it built incase anything bad ever happened, but we used it to hide as kids, to run away from the world. We could talk and laugh and listen to music for hours and nobody would ever know where we were. We climbed down and in. Emily's room was sophisticated almost adult like, but down here was completely different, covered in posters with a mini fridge music and a cute little disco ball it fit her personality perfectly. I sat on the couch in the tiny room and she pulled out two beers. "So dad still hasn't noticed yet?" I giggle opening mine. She laughs and nods and we talk for hours.
"It was so funny cause he was bright red!" I say giggling. I look at my watch and see that it's almost 6am. "I have to be up in an hour. See you at school?" She agrees and I walk out and into her room climbing back out the window. Immediately an idea flashes in my head and I just know what'll help make Emily feel more comfortable in school. I ran back to my place, shoving my closet open and putting together the most chaotic black outfit I'd ever worn. After I got into my car and drove to the nearest Starbucks. I got my two coffees and drove down to the school, as I head to school shocked glances cross everyone's face when they see me wearing black. I'd never worn black before. Not in public at least. My hair was as big as it got and my makeup scared some people. I walk inside the school and jaws drop when I walk to Emily's locker and lean on it. "How do I look?" I ask trying to seem scary. "Oh my god!" Emily laughs and I do a full 360. "I know, I'm hot." I giggle tucking hair behind my ear. We laugh about it for a bit and for the first time in five years, we do a stupid secret handshake we made up.
