Midnight; it's the only time each day, I get the simple pleasure of being alone. No one is calling my name. No one is mind linking me. No request are being made. No battle strategies being discussed. It's just silence in the cool crisp air. What I enjoy most of this time of night- is the moon, she's so beautiful. Situated at the highest point in the sky. In her fullest form, radiant with a glow that always seems to bring peace to my wolf and my very own soul.
I jog out of the pack house, pulling my shirt over my head. I can hear the bones start to break and land into place as my skin is torn to shreds and replaced with my deepest of black furr. I land on all fours and begin to weave through the trees around me. The cool gentle breeze glides across my fur, giving the pleasant feeling of goosebumps as my hair stands to attention. The closer I get to the waterfall's edge the calmer I feel. My wolf stops and gently lays at the edge of the falls, allowing his paws to lazily dangle over the edge. I can feel the mist of the water against his snout. He gazes up at the moon and howls. I get the sense he's longing for something or someone. But he's not sad, he just wants to hold a conversation with the moon.
As I retreat to the back of his mind, I recall the story of how our kind came to be. Legend says, at the beginning of time, The Gods grew tired of immortality and wanted to find a means to bring purpose into their never changing lives. They wanted to create a being of their own likeness, who had the capacity to learn, adapt to change and most importantly grow old. Man was formed from the will of the God's. The God's loved man. And found joy and purpose in watching them evolve over millennia. But the God's found man to be ignorant, easily manipulated and have the capacity to hold malice and ill will to not only each other but towards the God's. As time passed, man began to doubt the existence of the God's and soon forgot about them all together. The God's watched in horror as their children's hearts became darken with greed and hatred. The God's loved their children so much, they sent a champion to man's world. Her name was Selena. The Goddess Selena loved man above all other Gods, volunteering herself as the Champion of man. She journeyed to bring about peace, love and prosperity to man's world. As she spead her gospel, she found love with a writer named Paul. Who helped her spead her good news even further. They had three children - two sons named John and Luke. The pair also had a daughter. Her name was never mentioned in our history books.
Many of man became envious of the following the Godness gained due to her good works. A plot to kill the Goddess was planned and executed. Unfortunately, the would be assassination attempt was acted upon on the wrong female in the family. Sadly, Selena and Paul's daughter would not survive. Consumed with the grief of her loss, Selena sent her daughter's spirit to the realm of the God's, where she could live for eternity but never return to the world of man. Selena was the Goddess of the Moon, a guiding light for those lost in the dark. She guided her beloved child back to the moon, where they could always be as one. Scared for for her remaining children Selena asked her Brethren to combine their souls and bestow John and Luke the ability to protect themselves from the wrath of man.
The souls of the other Gods gave John and Luke the strength of many, the power to shape-shift into wolves, the ability to hear and smell what others could not and to heal from what others would surely succumb. But Selena gave her sons the power of the Moon itself. This gift was the ultimate love of one to another. This is the love Selena had for her children. This is the connection to another she wanted them to experience. This love would forge a bond so strong, no man could break but all would yearn for. The two souls would be as one, never to be separated like Selena and her lost daughter. This connection is strongest in those of us who would later be known as Alphas. Our history books never mention Selena's daughter's name, but the love she had for her daughter by sending her to the moon is stated to be the reason why a wolf's mate is the single most important entity on earth. Our mate is to us as the moon is to Selena. Ive always thought, that our connection to the moon and why our mates are called Lunas. They are our moon. Looking at up at the moon through the eyes of my wolf, I can't help but wonder who my Luna will be. I know I'm incomplete without her.
