lila is making the drive to see her mother, it's been a few weeks since she's seen her last and the last time they had a chat her mother was insistent that she come visit.
so here she was, waiting for the light to turn green as she makes her way. she pulls up to the modest four bedroom house and parks in the available space.
"lila how lovely to see you." her mother starts, grinning so brightly it blinds, she must've recently gotten her teeth whitened recently which is her new thing since she discovered self care.
she opens the door wider and lila steps inside, they walk deeper into the house towards the kitchen where it clearly smells like someone's been cooking. she can smell all her favourites, that must mean her mum wants something from her, probably to set her up on another date since she believes lila should at least have a boyfriend right now.
"i hope you're hungry there's lots of food." her mum says checking on the stew that's bubbling away. lila folds into old habits and goes straight to the fridge to get a drink, a good thing about mum was that there was always selection, so lila plucks a soda and closes the door with her hip.
"so what's new mum?"
"oh this and that." her mother says, faffing about the kitchen. "oh i did get a new bookshelf put into the living room, the old one was practically falling apart. I also got the bathroom floor tiles replaced."
her mother starts to recount on all the random things she's been doing around her house, how she's got a guy called mike helping out.
"oh i forgot to tell you such exciting news, diana, laurel's daughter is getting married." her mother claps her hands together excitedly, she's positively buzzing, anything to do with weddings were right up her alley, not to mention she's been hinting at the possibilities of lila getting married. "you must come, i've already rsvp'd that the family is coming."
lila groans, she'd much rather not go to snooty laurel's daughter's wedding, she can already tell the hand she played in. it, poor diana she was a sweet soul, nothing like her mother who was a socialite and gossip, living a life of prestige which she inherited from her late husband, while being with her new husband.
"when is it?"
"the wedding is a month from now, but they are having an engagement party next week saturday which you're also coming to."
"how can i resist when you're making all these decisions for me." lila says sarcastically, her mother rolls her eyes and turns back to cooking.
"it would be rude not to show up, we're like family friends, besides aren't you happy for diana? only twenty five and already getting married, he's a great guy too, real looker, works in a bank."
"right." her mother is only half listening, going on about how they met during diana's tennis lessons and hit it off, they're practically soulmates according to mum but she tends to over exaggerate things.
once she's done cooking, she gets lila's help to plate stuff up and transfer to the dining room table. lila's hears the keys and there popping his head in the house is her younger brother kane. he sniffs the air, pushing down his hoodie and walks towards the living room.
"that smells good, hey lila i didn't know you were visiting." kane says, dropping his bag and pulling his sister into a bear hug, he's tall and buff so she's really not budging under his weight, what are these eighteen year olds eating nowadays?
"get off." she swats him breaking free. "mum asked me round for dinner, how've you been, how's school?"
"school is a pain in my ass."
