Life In A Busy City

A life in a busy city is not as exhilarating as it sounds to everyone. Everyone else has his own opinion about something. If waking up everyday at 7.00 a.m sounds exciting to you, then this is the life for you.

My life is about waking up and realising that I would always wake up later than expected. The smell of the aromatic coffee beans to accompany me in the morning is soothing.

Life as a criminal lawyer is not easy. That would mean, long-hours of work and very limited time for a break or a holiday.

I rarely ever see my families back in Nebraska but they understand and support me well throughout my journey in becoming a lawyer.

I would leave my apartment at exactly 7.20 a.m everyday. From my apartment to my well designed building that I proudly call my workplace only takes thirty to forty minutes by subway. I do not own a car as it is pointless to own one in this busy city.

I work at Nicholson, Hewitt & West, one of the best and well managed law firm in the country. My work involves investigating, questioning my clients and to also visit the New York City Department of Correction. It was petrifying to enter that place for the first few times, but now, the foreboding dread is gone.

There are also times where I have to discuss of my case with my colleagues. Colleagues who have more experience than me would always lend me a hand whenever I need their assistance.

Office hours is only until 6.00 p.m, but lawyers like us would always stay after work hours are over to finish up our stacks and stacks of documents that need to go through.

We would always complain of our work and that we are poorly rested but nevertheless, I love my job even though it may be challenging or demanding at times.

On certain days that I have to go to court which are always enriching and exciting. People would randomly think it is terrifying to go to court and all but for me, it is the complete opposite. Every second that I spend in the court excites me and having to defend my clients give me such a rush. In a way, I am helping others.

I would usually arrive at my apartment at around 9.00 p.m. I would just order the chinese take-out from downstairs.

Times like this is the loneliest time of the day. My families who have everyone surrounding them from friends to neighbours won't have to feel or know how lonely I am.

Nowadays, I do everything by myself. My other friends from college nor my colleagues at work are too busy with their own families to worry about me.

At the age of 28, I am still single and a proud workaholic. I know that at my age, I should be settling down and raising my own family. But I have so much to achieve in life at this moment to think my future and what challenges awaits for me ahead.

At nights, as I am waiting for sleep to take me, I would always wonder and think what my life has prepared for me tomorrow, in the city that never sleeps.
