                                02. The Night Of The Comet

The sun shined through the open window inside Nikolina's room, a soft breeze drifting through the room. The birds chirped as the girl stood Infront of her dresser, her face close to the mirror touching up her lip-gloss.

Nikolina felt good, she woke up in anticipation that this was all a dream, that she was imagining a happy life. She half expected her mother to emerge and laugh at her hopeful expression, crushing the only happiness she had.

But that never came.

This; her new life, was real.

She looked in the mirror at her outfit of the day, She wore low rise blue jeans, white heels, a white fitted dress shirt and a white fabric round cut corset that hugged her skinny waist.

Nikolina had always been skinny, it was the product of living with her mother and as she said, the product of being a part of the Petrov family. Her mother was responsible for what the girl ate, and what she didn't eat and as a result the girl was incredibly skinny. This meant she had to work extra hard to disguise the bruises that decorated her fragile skin when her mother was mad, which was almost all the time.

It had seemed that this feature had carried over to her new body. The girl was skinnier that her sister, with a flat stomach, skinny waist and sticks for arms and legs. The girl was lucky that she had shape to her skinny figure otherwise it would be incredibly noticeable how she was practically skin and bones. In her old life she was desired just like her mother, her figure attributed to that fact, other than the plain fact that she was Alina Petrov's daughter and took after her mother's stunning features.

Nikolina stared at herself in the mirror, a small part of her hoping that things will be different in this life, that she will have a family that truly loves her, that she will no longer be afraid.

She vowed that she would protect those she cared about, that those who had died before would not share that same fate, things would be different whilst Nikolina was here.

She grabbed her handbag and with a last glance at her hair, that greatly resembled Katherine's in 1864, she walked out of her tidy room, shutting the door behind her, bumping into her sister.

"shit you scared me!" Said a panicked Nikolina with a sigh, hand on her racing heart.

Elena smiled pitifully and apologised, "Sorry, I didn't see you there, I'm in my own world today."

Nikolina waved it off with a shrug, "It's fine, I'm jumpy today."

The two girls proceeded to make their way downstairs before getting stopped by Jenna, "Morning girls, do I look adult?", Jenna did a slow twirl showing off her outfit, "As in, respectfully parental?".

"Depends where you're going" Elena replied with a raised eyebrow.

"Jeremy's parent teacher conference with Tanner" Jenna informed with a grimace before walking to the mirror, "What do you think, hair up or down?".

"Sexy stewardess" Nikolina teased with a smile.

Jenna let her hair down, "Boozy housewife!" Elena said.

"Up it is" Jenna said, making the girls laugh, smiles on their faces. "Your feisty today" She said towards Elena.

Elena smiled, "I feel good today, which is rare so I've decided to go with it. Fly free, walk on sunshine and all that."
