As Heather and her mum reach the door to apartment number 17, Heather starts to regret coming with her mum to England. "Maybe I should've stayed with aunt Jane..." she thinks.

She watches her mum put the key in the keyhole and turn it. She hears the door unlock and her mum mutter another complaint under her breath.

Heather sighs and pulls up the handle of her suitcase. She drags it into the hallway of the apartment and drops the handle. She turns around to see her mum muttering about how filthy the floors look.

Heather rolls her eyes and picks up her suitcase. "Mum, we just moved in, can you please not criticize everything in sight?" Heather mumbles under her breath.

Heather and her mum spend the next week organizing the apartment, putting away stuff from the old house and just setting up the apartment in general.

By the time they're done, it's the 31st of August. The day before Heather starts her new English school.

Heather is sitting on her bed, listening to 'Back In Black' by AC/DC on her Walkman, when her mum knocks on her door.

"Heather? Can I come in?" She asks cautiously.

Heather takes out her earbuds and turns to her mum. "Mhm, yeah, what's wrong?" She says.

Aaliyah walks into the room and sits beside Heather on the bed. "Heather, this new school that you will be starting tomorrow, well, we need to talk about it."

Heather furrows her brows and looks at her mother curiously. "What about it?" She asks.

Aaliyah takes a breath. "There's these... kids there," she mumbles.

Heather looks at her mother as if she's lost her mind. "Mum, you do realize that it is a school?"

Aaliyah chuckles and waves her hand. "No, no, you didn't let me finish. These kids, well, there's certain kids there that you're beat off to stay away from."

Heather furrows her brows at her mother once again. "Why? Are they, like, murderers?" She asks.

Aaliyah laughs softly. "No, they're not murderers. They do, however, know your dad."

Heather felt her heart stop. Her dad? She'd never met her dad and, according to her mum, he cleared off a few months before she was born. Apparently, her dad is one of those 'bimbos' that her mum makes fun of in the street.

Heather nods at mother. "So, you want me to stay away from them, because they're associated with my dad?"

Aaliyah nods. "Please darling, it's for your own good."

Heather hesitates, but smile gently and nods at her mother. "Okay, I'll keep my distance."

Aaliyah smiles at her daughter. "There's my good girl." She ruffles her hair and walks out.

"Distance my ass," Heather mutters once she's gone.
