Chapter 1: Know you more

After a long, intense match with 2 minutes overtime, Medkit's team finally took the win as the sun peeked up from the horizon.

Despite the victory, Medkit wasn't too fond of how his teammates played; it was an absolute mess! The Doc grumbled while he patched up his remaining wounds, then picked up his medkit and started heading to Crossroad. But before he could even walk for a few steps, he was stopped dead in his tracks by someone yelling for his name... At that moment, he swore that if it was another person who wanted healing again, he wouldn't hesitate to charge them extra. Medkit thought to himself, then turned around coldly like he was a concrete statue.

A pink-horned demon waving at him was what he saw, that demon was Vinestaff, one of his teammates, who was also a healer. But because of that, he quickly concluded that she probably needed him for random things. Medkit sighed, he didn't want to care about any of this, especially since he had just met her. So, he ignored the flower girl and continued his path to Crossroad.

Vinestaff blinked in confusion. She wanted to know more about him due to her finding out that they had a lot in common earlier that day. But to her surprise, he just walked away like she wasn't there... Oh well, Vinestaff put her hand down and turned to her brother Shuriken, who was talking to Slingshot. However, before she could say anything, Shuriken jumped in and spoke:

“Hey, sis! So me and Sling have some things to do with Skate! So uhh... You should head back to the cafe without us! We'll be there late.”

"Oh! Sure then! Just be back before 9, the dishes ain't cleaning itself!” - Her voice was filled with surprise but quickly changed to playful teasing.

"Ugh… fineeee, See you then!"

“Mhm! Bye Shuri! Bye Sling!"

Vinestaff watched the two walk away, both catching up with the Speedy Skateboard. So, she turned to the opposite way that led to Slingshot's cafe... which coincidentally, was also the way Medkit was heading.

In all honesty, she wanted some company, so she took her chances and ran after Medkit, hoping she could talk to him on the way there.

"Hey, Doc! How was the last match? Stressful, wasn't it?" - Vinestaff approached him and asked in order to start the conversation.

“It was horrible.” - Medkit replied, not making eye contact.

“Well, at least we won, right?”

“No, only you and your allies won. I lost a couple of brain cells trying to heal our teammates.”

“Oh- oh yeah… It's annoying to hear our teammates yelling for our name every second they want healing… I can't catch a break!” - The flower girl complained.

“It seems that we have the same pain.”

“Heh! We're both healers, after all. We have a lot in common like... you're just like me!”

“I think you've said that before.”

“And what's stopping me from saying it again?”

“Nothing, I suppose.”

Medkit kept replying so coldly that it was hard for Vinestaff to hold the conversation. While Medkit didn't really want to talk to her or anyone, he thought he could just give her a straight answer so she could go away. Vinestaff decided to try to open a conversation again, hoping it would last longer:

“So… Uhm, about Subspace... he-”

“Don't you dare mention his name in front of me.” - Medkit immediately snapped!

“O- oh! I'm sorry! I didn't know you hated him that much!” - Startled by the sudden snap! Vinestaff profusely apologized to Med.

"Hm." - Medkit sighed, not saying another word.

Both of them walked in silence after that. No one tried to say anything or make a sound other than their own footsteps. Only the ambient noises of nature filled the empty silence, but it wasn't enough. Vinestaff started to feel a bit guilty, she didn't know Medkit hated Subspace that much! Then she glanced at Medkit, who was just staring at the scenery around to avoid eye contact again.

This was getting awkward… too awkward in fact. One must break the silence or it would be like this for the rest of the trip. So, Medkit spoke up, still looking the opposite way like he didn't care much.

"So, your healing. How do they work?"

Vinestaff's eyes sparkled in excitement, oh my Illumina he finally asked something!

"Oh?”

"I asked how they work. I didn't have a good look at it during the battle."

"Ah... Well, you see these sprouts? First I'll plant ‘em. Then when my allies touch it, they'll get healed!!”

"I see.”

“Neat, right? …I'm still concerned about your way of healing teammates though… Shooting them does not look healthy!”

“I don't see anything wrong, it has been pretty effective so far.”

"I guess it's true… it's just that I've never seen someone doing that before."

"Same for you. Your way of healing is... interesting." - Medkit crossed his arms as he spoke.

Just as they were about to know each other more, Vinestaff had unfortunately reached her destination. Slingshot’s cat cafe was right next to her, which meant she had to stop. So, she did and stood next to the entrace while Medkit took a few more steps before realizing she had stayed behind. The doctor turned back, waiting for her to say something with a blank expression.

"Whoops! I gotta bail! This is my stop, so... I guess we have to end our talk here...! It was fun talking to you Doc!" - Vinestaff sighed, scratching the back of her head in pity.

"Hm, Farewell then. It was… nice talking to you, I guess.” - Medkit calmly spoke, his tone was still cold but not as much as before.

Vinestaff waved goodbye and moonwalked back to the cafe as she watched Medkit going away. Her moonwalking didn't stop until she lightly hit the counter. “Oof! Time to get to work!” She sighed. And with that, she started doing her job as usual until Shuriken and Slingshot arrived. She didn't think much about the conversation other than being disappointed how short it lasted. Maybe next time they'd get to talk longer.
