This is for the culture
Haven't you heard
Bamboo hoops with colorful wigs
Long nails and a ring for each finger.
The culture is loud bubble gums smacking
Lined lips and Vaseline
It is neck rolling
and
coming home before the street lights come on.
This is for the culture
Haven't you heard
Cornrows
Loc's
Twist and braids.
Afros
Flat twist and swooped edges
The culture is 400 years of curated style
Runways copying and misrepresenting
It is misunderstood and unappreciated.
The culture is durag's
Bonnets and silk pillowcases
It is being told our hair is unkempt
and is forced to be covered
with head wraps
Wigs and relaxers.
This is for the culture
Haven't you heard
Washing your hair at the sink
Greasing scalps
And clipping ends
But
The culture is much more
Than this.
