The adventure was coming to a close. We all knew that. It was very well possible that tonight was the last night we'd spend together like this. The three of us, around a fire, in the middle of the woods.
I had suggested the idea. Astarion was against it at first. Being dramatic about choosing to sleep outside when we had real beds right there! But he inevitably agreed, For old times sake. We laughed, we drank and broke bread. For a moment I didn't have a care in the world, but as we finished eating an unpleasant feeling began to grow in the back of my mind.
What if this really was the last time we'd be together like this?

"I have to say.. I am going to miss this." Gale spoke, breaking the silence that had befallen us after dinner.

"Miss what Exactly?" Astarion asks pointedly, the slightest of smiles pulling at his lips no matter how he tries to hide it.

"All of it actually." Gale was far less shy with his smile, practically beaming back at Astarion.

I stayed quiet. I wasn't an idiot; I saw the way they looked at each other. Whether they know it or not is debatable, but I do, I know. I could just tell.

"The fresh air, the night sky." Gale went on. "Moments like these I once took for granted. And it's moments like this I'll miss."

"You're making it sound like you'll never see the light of day again." Astarion sasses. "I swear, you should stop being so dramatic. That's my thing."

Gale laughed. I had to look up from the fire I had been tending too. His genuine laugh was one of my favorite sounds in the entire world. It was Astarion's too; I could tell by how his eyes lit up upon enticing the reaction.

"All I'm saying is that it won't be the same." Gale says.

"What do you mean by that?" Astarion asks.

"Well.. If our Adventure is truly ending. Then I won't have being with You two to look forward to." Gale glances at me.
I froze. This whole time I thought the two of them were in their own world- leaving me on the outside looking in. One small gesture and that illusion I'd made in my head shattered.

"I'll miss it too.."

"I think you two are being ridiculous." Astarion said with a sour expression.

"Oh come on. Are you truly saying you won't miss us?" Gale says in an attempted joke to try and lighten the mood. Or maybe because he just wanted to see Astarion smile again, and Honestly, who could blame him?

"I'm saying I don't want to." Astarion says looking into the flame. "And Honestly I don't think I should have too."

"I don't understand.."

"Me neither." Gale agreed.

"Idiots." Astarion muttered under his breath, but he was smiling. "I don't see why this has to be a goodbye. There is nothing stopping us from just staying how we are."

"So you do care." Gale says as cheeky as always.

"Of course I do." Astarion says, surprisingly serious in tone. "I wish I didn't. Because then I wouldn't care that you two obviously just want to go your separate ways."

"I never said that, Well I just assumed since.." Gale was completely caught off guard. And so was I.

"You want us to stay together?"

"Is that so wrong of me?"

"No! No, of course not." I managed to say without stammering, which was a surprise since my heart was racing faster than ever. "I just didn't expect you to say what I'd been thinking this whole time."
