Yuki felt a tightness in his chest, which quickly climbed up to his throat, forcing tears from his eyes. The sight seemed to have reopened an old wound he didn't realize still existed.
Yet, he had a feeling that he'd been in this situation before, many times, like déjà vu. Tears blurred Yuki's vision until all he could see was haze.
The next time light managed to break through, the first thing he saw was his mother's smiling face. He had finally woken up.
The doctor said Yuki was fortunate the knife hadn't struck a vital organ, and his loss of consciousness was solely due to the trauma.
When their assailant tried to stab Ren, and Yuki jumped between them, he instinctively pulled back, preventing the knife from piercing through completely, but the wound was deep enough to affect Yuki's mobility.
Unlike him, Ren had no serious injuries, but the shock knocked him unconscious. He woke up a few hours later and was discharged from the hospital immediately.
"How are you feeling?" Mito asked Yuki while tenderly holding his right hand.
"I'm feeling better. Is Ren alright?" Yuki inquired while pushing himself up the headboard.
"He's fine. He has no serious injuries, just a few bruises and scratches. But he was crying heavily when we found you two," explained Yuki's mother.
"I see. That's great, then. When can I go home, 'kaasan?"
"Soon. Just focus on recovering. We'll take care of the rest."
"Hai. Arigato, 'kaasan."
Right when he said that, someone knocked on the door. It was Kazuki.
"Kazuki, come in." Yuki's mother let Kazuki in and offered him a seat.
"I'll leave you two. I'm going out to buy some fruit and snacks. Kazuki, do you need anything?" Yuki's mother asked while prepping her handbag.
"I'm good, Mito-san. Domo!"
As soon as Yuki's mother left, Kazuki pulled his chair closer to the bed so he could talk to Yuki more easily.
"How's your wound? Ren told me what happened."
"It still hurts, but the doctor said it's not life-threatening. I can go back to school in a couple of weeks, I guess. How's Ren doing?
"Ren's fine. But he's still upset about what happened."
"Upset? How?"
"When I went to their house, his mother said he wouldn't leave his room. I insisted on going in. He let me."
"Then, what happened?"
"Well, I asked him to tell me everything."
"And?"
"He said he can't forgive himself for what happened to you. He thinks it's his fault."
"He said that?"
"Was it his fault, though?"
"No, of course not. It's no one's fault but those bastards who tried to take him."
"Yuki."
"What?"
"Your hands."
"Heh?"
Yuki's hands were shaking involuntarily.
"Is that normal?"
"I don't know. I've never seen them do that before."
"Are you feeling okay? Should I call someone?"
"Please don't. It'll probably go away. So, what did you tell Ren?" Yuki opposed as he tucked his hands under the blanket. Kazuki gave him a vacant look and then resumed talking.
"I told him the same thing you said. No effect on him. Maybe if you talk to him, he'd feel better."
"That's what I plan to do once I get out of here."
